Chambers and published by The Study. This book was released on 1996 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this report is to assess the sources of nitrogen and phosphorus to the Athabasca and Wapiti/Smoky rivers and evaluate the need to consider groundwater contributions when undertaking simulation modelling of chemical parameters of the Athabasca River during winter. To address the first objective, longitudinal trends in nitrogen and phosphorus were examined for each river system in relation to point source inputs and the contributions of anthropogenic point sources and agricultural activity in the rivers' nutrient loads were quantified. The importance of groundwater during winter was assessed by examining hydrologic mass balances and changes in dominant ion proportions. Results are presented of analyses of long-term values of nutrients from ten sites on the Athabasca and three sites on the Wapiti/Smoky rivers.

Book excerpt: This document presents a guidance framework for the management of phosphorus in freshwater systems. The introduction reviews the development & validation of this framework. Chapter 2 presents a review of the scientific literature on phosphorus in the aquatic environment, including properties, sources, fate, sediment interactions, parameters affecting phosphorus availability, trophic status, & effects on organisms. Chapter 3 examines a number of approaches used by other jurisdictions for setting phosphorus guidelines. Chapter 4 outlines the proposed framework-based approach for phosphorus management in which water bodies are marked for further assessment by comparing their trophic status to predefined ranges of phosphorus concentration. Chapter 5 summarizes some of the recommended assessment options currently use in Canada & other jurisdictions. Chapter 6 reviews management options that can be considered once the phosphorus concentrations have been assessed & compared to original goals for the water body. The final two chapters present case studies of implementation of this framework at Lake Simcoe in Ontario and at Kodiak Lake, Northwest Territories.

Book excerpt: Tools of the Trade: Methods, Techniques and Innovative Approaches in Archaeology presents a collection of academic papers from the 2005 Chacmool archaeological conference, which includes a wide range of contributions from international archaeologists, senior professors, and students alike. Each chapter focuses on the discussion and application of unique and innovative 'tools' for archaeological analysis and interpretation, including micro- and macro-botanical analysis, experimental study, off-site survey, lithic use-wear, ceramic petrography, DNA analysis, cha ne op ratoire, space syntax, and Geographic Information Systems. As a collective volume, Tools of the Trade: Methods, Techniques and Innovative Approaches in Archaeology also covers an impressive diversity of geographic regions and time periods, such as Precolumbian Mesoamerica, Plio-Pleistocene Africa, prehistoric and historic North America, and ancient Polynesia. Finally, this volume provides a somewhat introspective look at the origins of tool use, technological development, and the means by which we have become the only species to ask the questions: What does it mean to be us and how can we find out? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance. They also discuss the integration of landscape ecological knowledge into policies of forest management policies, particularly with respect to Ontario's legislative goals of forest sustainability. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape is the first book to describe the landscape ecology of a continuously forested landscape in a comprehensive manner. It is written for instructors and students in forest management, wildlife ecology, and landscape ecology, and for forest managers, planners, and policy developers in North America.

Mounting evidence suggests, however, that Canadian water is under threat. Eau Canada assembles the country's top water experts to discuss our most pressing water issues. Perspectives from a broad range of thinkers - geographers, environmental lawyers, former government officials, aquatic and political scientists, and economists - reflect the diversity of concerns in water management. Arguing that weak governance is at the heart of Canada's water problems, this timely book identifies our key failings, explores debates over jurisdiction, transboundary waters, exports, and privatization, and maps out solutions for protecting our most important resource.
