Book Synopsis Contributions of a Wall Shear Stress to the Magnus Effect on Nose Shapes by : Ira D. Jacobson
Download or read book Contributions of a Wall Shear Stress to the Magnus Effect on Nose Shapes written by Ira D. Jacobson and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of an asymmetric transition on wall shear stress is presented. It is shown that the Magnus force and moment can be substantially changed due to the shear stress contribution for the mixed boundary layer case on a spinning body. Comparison is made with the Magnus contributions due to pressure forces indicating the shear stress can account for as much as fifty percent or more of the total side force and moment. Some experimental data are analyzed to illustrate the trends predicted. (Author).

Book Synopsis Boundary-layer Studies on Spinning Bodies of Revolution by : Walter B. Sturek
Download or read book Boundary-layer Studies on Spinning Bodies of Revolution written by Walter B. Sturek and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the effects of spin induced distortion of the boundary-layer on a spinning cone and tangent-ogive-cylinder model for small angle of attack at Mach 2, 3 and 4 is reported. The profile of the location of boundary-layer transition has been determined completely about the surface of the models from spark shadowgraphs. These spark shadowgraphs were taken with the model mounted on an offset strut which was rolled incrementally in azimuth to reveal the entire surface of the model. Strain gage balance measurements of Magnus and normal force were made for three significantly different boundary-layer configurations--predominately laminar, predominately turbulent, tripped to turbulent--and confirm the pronounced sensitivity of Magnus to boundary-layer configuration. Book Synopsis A Physical Introduction to Fluid Mechanics by : Alexander J. Smits
Download or read book A Physical Introduction to Fluid Mechanics written by Alexander J. Smits and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 2000 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncover Effective Engineering Solutions to Practical Problems With its clear explanation of fundamental principles and emphasis on real world applications, this practical text will motivate readers to learn. The author connects theory and analysis to practical examples drawn from engineering practice. Readers get a better understanding of how they can apply these concepts to develop engineering answers to various problems. By using simple examples that illustrate basic principles and more complex examples representative of engineering applications throughout the text, the author also shows readers how fluid mechanics is relevant to the engineering field. These examples will help them develop problem-solving skills, gain physical insight into the material, learn how and when to use approximations and make assumptions, and understand when these approximations might break down. Key Features of the Text * The underlying physical concepts are highlighted rather than focusing on the mathematical equations. * Dimensional reasoning is emphasized as well as the interpretation of the results. * An introduction to engineering in the environment is included to spark reader interest. * Historical references throughout the chapters provide readers with the rich history of fluid mechanics.
Book Synopsis Multiscale and Multiresolution Approaches in Turbulence by : Pierre Sagaut
Download or read book Multiscale and Multiresolution Approaches in Turbulence written by Pierre Sagaut and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims to provide the reader with an updated general presentation of multiscale/multiresolution approaches in turbulent flow simulations. All modern approaches (LES, hybrid RANS/LES, DES, SAS) are discussed and recast in a global comprehensive framework. Both theoretical features and practical implementation details are addressed. Some full scale applications are described, to provide the reader with relevant guidelines to facilitate a future use of these methods.
