Book excerpt: A historical study of Vitruvius's De architectura, showing that his purpose in writing "the whole body of architecture" was shaped by the imperial Roman project of world domination. Vitruvius's De architectura is the only major work on architecture to survive from classical antiquity, and until the eighteenth century it was the text to which all other architectural treatises referred. While European classicists have focused on the factual truth of the text itself, English-speaking architects and architectural theorists have viewed it as a timeless source of valuable metaphors. Departing from both perspectives, Indra Kagis McEwen examines the work's meaning and significance in its own time. Vitruvius dedicated De architectura to his patron Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor, whose rise to power inspired its composition near the end of the first century B.C. McEwen argues that the imperial project of world dominion shaped Vitruvius's purpose in writing what he calls "the whole body of architecture." Specifically, Vitruvius's aim was to present his discipline as the means for making the emperor's body congruent with the imagined body of the world he would rule. Each of the book's four chapters treats a different Vitruvian "body." Chapter 1, "The Angelic Body," deals with the book as a book, in terms of contemporary events and thought, particularly Stoicism and Stoic theories of language. Chapter 2, "The Herculean Body," addresses the book's and its author's relation to Augustus, whose double Vitruvius means the architect to be. Chapter 3, "The Body Beautiful," discusses the relation of proportion and geometry to architectural beauty and the role of beauty in forging the new world order. Finally, Chapter 4, "The Body of the King," explores the nature and unprecedented extent of Augustan building programs. Included is an examination of the famous statue of Augustus from Prima Porta, sculpted soon after the appearance of De architectura.

Book excerpt: Since the 1950s, Hungarian-French architect, painter, writer, and decorator Yona Friedman (b, 1923) has worked on conceptual plans for urban housing alternatives and third world building development. He came to prominence in 1958 for his manifesto, l'Architecture Mobile, and later for his Ville Spatiale (Spatial Town) -- a housing system built off the ground based on a three-dimensional grid. His integrated socio-economic conception of architecture addressed both housing solutions for existing metropolitan areas and also for urbanizing third world cities. Friedman was also commissioned by UNESCO to design visual instructions for unskilled laborers to build structures solidly and efficiently with simple materials and techniques. This is the first monograph on his work.

Book excerpt: No other architect since Palladio has exercised such an immense influence as Le Corbusier. As with Einstein and Picasso, Le Corbusier made an impact that was felt within but also outside his special discipline. Through numerous buildings, urban projects, paintings, sculptures, drawings, and publications, he succeeded to develop a unique poetics of" machine "and "metaphor," revolutionizing the way people see, use, and make architecture. More than a modern architect, Le Corbusier was the "architect "of "modern life." The present monograph discusses Le Corbusier's oeuvre in a concise global manner in relation to the revolutionary developments of the century in which it was born. It shows how Le Corbusier worked within the context of new philosophical ideas; the avant-garde culture; the social, economic, and political movements; and new technology, achieving more than a delicate balance-- a synthesis. But it demonstrates also that Le Corbusier was a creator who conceived, enticed, and shaped many of these developments. As well as being "the" architect of the twentieth century, Le Corbusier is a prototype of human "creativity."

Book excerpt: This is a revealing book which, for the first time, investigates the central influence of feminism in the work of Le Corbusier; one of the most important and revered architects of all time. The text covers Le Corbusier’s upbringing and training and sets this in the context of the cultural atmosphere of his time, covering issues of gender and religion. It reveals aspects of his private life such as personal relationships, which have barely been explored before as no biography currently exists. Furthermore, the author reveals, for the first time in print, a previously undiscovered and unpublished Le Corbusier building, making this book an incredibly significant addition to existing literature on the great man. In short, the new evidence and theories contained in this volume amount to major revelations about this hugely revered and central architectural figure of the 20th Century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The present book on the life and work of Joze Plecnik (1872-1957) represents a timely novelty. It is only recently that Plecnik has gained recognition as the most important Slovene and Yugoslav artist, and that his name has become fully integrated into our cultural awareness. His rise to world prominence was finally consolidated in 1986 with the great retrospective exhibition of his work at the Pompidou Center in Paris." "In the past decade, Plecnik has emerged not only as a member of Moderna, the Slovene artistic movement that encompassed the period from the end of the 19th-century to World War I, but also as a powerful representative of 20th-century Modernism. He has escaped any theoretical categorization, since he did not embrace any individual dogma or subscribe to any specific modernist doctrine. Incorporating both historical and modern elements, his work offered a necessary stepping stone between 19th-century eclecticism and contemporary functionalism." "This is the first truly comprehensive monograph on Plecnik's work, based on more than fifteen years of research by author Peter Krecic. Following a chronological organization, the author explores Plecnik's life from his education and architectural training to his professional development and mature production. Mr. Krecic examines in detail the architect's fundamental works, as well as his methodology and design process. With over 300 illustrations, including splendid photographic documentation and many facsimiles of original drawings from Plecnik's archives, this book is incomparable in beauty and quality."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
