Book excerpt: Les recherches sur ce sujet se base sur la prise de conscience qu'il est possible de réaliser des équipements de très petite taille pouvant être exploité dans des différents domaines comme : l'habitat intelligent, surveillance et sécurité, les applications médicales, gestion d'une exploitation agricole, etc.Contrairement aux réseaux traditionnels qui se concentrent essentiellement à fournir une meilleure qualité de service (QoS), les RCSFs doivent, en plus, se préoccuper à conserver au mieux l'énergie dans le réseau.En effet, ils doivent adopter des techniques qui permettent aux utilisateurs de maximiser la durée de vie du réseau en entier, car chaque capteur est alimenté par une source d'énergie limitée et généralement irremplaçable.C'est pourquoi, il est important d'optimiser les performances de ce type de réseau en termes d'énergie à tous les niveaux de conception. Dans ce contexte, cette thèse est dédiée à l'étude des différentes techniques adoptées au niveau de la couche physique et MAC, plus particulièrement au processus de modulation et du codage des données puis aux techniques de relayage des informations. En effet, le choix de la modulation optimale et de la méthode de codage du canal appropriée est une tâche cruciale à la couche physique de cette classe de réseaux.Pour ce faire, nous avons présenté en premier temps les différents aspects caractérisant les réseaux de capteurs sans fil. Puis, les efforts engagés pour maximiser la conservation de l'énergie dans ces réseaux ont été résumés. En second lieu, nous nous sommes focalisés sur l'impact du choix du schéma de modulation et du codage canal dans les RCSFs, afin de trouver la consommation optimale permettant de préserver au mieux l'énergie du noeud capteur.Dans la dernière partie de notre étude, nous nous sommes intéressés à l'intégration de la coopération au niveau de la couche MAC afin de quantifier le gain apporté en termes de consommation d'énergie ainsi qu'en termes de stabilité des liens radio.

Book excerpt: Extending the lifetime of a sensor network requires optimizations at two complementary scopes: local and global. At the scope front, each node should optimize its own energy consumption to maximize its life span. At the global scope, nodes should cooperate to optimize the global usage of energy resources. ln this thesis, we have addressed both problems through the optimization of communication protocols. Our contribution mainly concerns MAC and Routing protocols. At the MAC layer, we have tackled the problem of reduction two major sources of energy waste: collisions and overhearing. We have differentiated two types of collisions: those caused by hidden nodes and those caused by visible nodes, and two forms of overhearing: that resulting from the reception of irrelevant messages and that resulting from the reception of useless signais. For ail of these identified sources of energy waste, we have proposed solutions that improve the networks lifetime. At the routing layer, we have proposed a protocol capable of combining two lifetime extension techniques: reducing protocols' overhead and load balancing among nodes to avoid their premature death Our contribution in this thesis not only provides more energy-efficient MAC and routing protocols that are optimized independently from each other, but also a cross layer design in which MAC and routing protocols are jointly optimized.

Book excerpt: By modeling pedagogical scenarios as directed geometrical graphs and proposing an associated modeling language, this book describes how rich learning activities, often designed for small classes, can be scaled up for use with thousands of participants. With the vertices of these graphs representing learning activities and the edges capturing the pedagogical relationship between activities, individual, team, and class-wide activities are integrated into a consistent whole. The workflow mechanisms modeled in the graphs enable the construction of scenarios that are richer than those currently implemented in MOOCs. The cognitive states of learners in two consecutive activities feed a transition matrix, which encapsulates the probability of succeeding in the second activity, based on success in the former. This transition matrix is summarized by a numerical value, which is used as the weight of the edge. This pedagogical framework is connected to stochastic models, with the goal of making learning analytics more appealing for data scientists. However, the proposed modeling language is not only useful in learning technologies, it also allows researchers in learning sciences to formally describe the structure of any lesson, from an elementary school lesson with 20 students to an online course with 20,000 participants.
