Si on ne remédie pas immédiatement à cette maniere d'étre, l'inflammation de la pulpe ou pulpite en est la conséquence. Book excerpt: Muscle weakness with ageing is almost inevitable, generally beginning to manifest beyond the age of 40, and is usually unstoppable. It can lead to reduced mobility, increased risk of falling, injury, and even death. But “you’re just getting old” is not a sufficient diagnosis. Specific causes of neuromuscular symptoms may explain progressive muscle weakness, and should be investigated for potential treatment. Muscle Ageing, Inclusion-Body Myositis and Myopathies explores the clinical and pathological expression of muscle weakness in aging persons. Case studies demonstrate how physicians can more accurately diagnose weakening elderly patients and make better management decisions. It also explores sporadic inclusion-body myositis and hereditary inclusion-body myopathies. The former, the most common progressive muscle disease in the over 50s, is frequently under-diagnosed and, with the increasing population of aged individuals, is presenting a greater challenge. This disease of muscle has pathological similarities with the well-known Alzheimer and Parkinson brain diseases. Edited and written by a leading international cast of authors, Muscle Ageing, Inclusion-Body Myositis and Myopathies provides a state-of-the-art guide to ageing-associated neuromuscular disorders. It should be in the hands of all those involved in the care of aging and muscle-weakened patients. Book excerpt: Meet the clinical challenge of the difficult and failed airway with this updated full-color guide A Doody's Core Title for 2015! Includes DVD with airway techniques! "This beautifully illustrated and extensively referenced textbook provides a comprehensive review of the available options for airway management....For the busy clinician, this book provides the most up-to-date review available of the many innovations that have been introduced in the past 10 years."--Steven L. Shafer, MD, Columbia University Written by the founders of The Difficult Airway Course: AnesthesiaTM and utilizing an instructive case-based approach, this text/DVD presents all of the leading-edge principles, tools, and procedures of airway assessment and management. The scope of the book encompasses the many airway devices that have been developed since the publication of the first edition, many of which have the potential to markedly enhance airway management. Extensively revised and updated, the second edition of Management of the Difficult and Failed Airway emphasizes how airway management is context-sensitive: included are strategies for treating patients in a range of settings, from prehospital care to the ER, as well as proven techniques for special patient populations. In addition, new chapters have been added to further refresh the book’s content and provide you with a solid grasp of the most critical topics in this fast-evolving area. The book’s effective organization has been maintained, beginning with the first section’s focus on the basic foundations of difficult and failed airway management. The second section reviews must-know airway devices and techniques, while the third part of the text introduces case studies that thoroughly examine the application of these techniques in complex clinical situations. A final section covers the practical considerations, such as difficult airway carts and teaching and simulation in airway management. FEATURES Skill-building, case-based approach highlights the right tools and techniques for stabilizing the patient, plus important safety precautions relevant to the clinical setting New “context-sensitive” focus links airway techniques to specific clinical environments, including airway cases in prehospital care, the emergency department, the critical care unit, and the operating room Essential new chapters cover the fundamental principles of bag-mask-ventilation, single lung ventilation using double lumen tubes, and airway management in austere environments, in addition to airway education and simulation Mnemonics, easy-to-follow algorithms, and alternative strategies (Plan A, Plan B, etc.) in every chapter reinforce pivotal concepts Chapter-ending questions offer effective self-assessment Accompanying DVD with instructive video visually explains common procedures in a learn-as-you-go style

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Sclerosis: The History of a Disease won a 2005 ForeWord Book of the Year Silver Medal! The basic facts about multiple sclerosis are well known: it is the most common neurologic disease of young adults, usually beginning with episodic attacks of neurologic symptoms, then entering a progressive phase some years later. Its onset has an average age of 30, and occurs in about 1 in 500 individuals of European ancestry living primarily in temperate climates. There appears to be a complex interaction between a genetic predisposition and an environmental trigger that initiates the disease. But these facts do not convey the impact of the disease on the people whose lives it affects. In this elegantly written and comprehensive history, we meet individuals who suffered with MS in the centuries before the disease had a name, including blessed Lidwina of Holland, who took joy from her misery, believing that she was sent to accept suffering for the sins of others; Augustus d'Est, grandson of George III and cousin of Queen Victoria, whose case shows how someone with access to the best of medical care of the age was understood and managed; and Heinrich Heine, the great German poet, who also had access to all medical services that were available, but who progressed into his mattress grave in two decades, aware of the loss of physical ability while still able to compose great poetry to the end. From these early cases the author demonstrates how progress in diagnosing and managing multiple sclerosis has paralleled the development of medical science, from the early developments in modern studies of anatomy and pathology, to the framing of the disease in the nineteenth century, and eventually to modern diagnosis and treatment. From beginning to end, Dr. Murray takes us on a fascinating journey of discovery, in the process showing how the evolution of our understanding of multiple sclerosis has been part of the greater history of medical knowledge.
