Les emprunts se répartissent en deux grandes périodes : les emprunts antérieurs à l'islam et les emprunts liés à la Révélation. Les premiers, du vocabulaire courant pour la plupart, viennent de l'akkadien, l'araméen, le persan, le grec, le latin. Ils montrent les contacts linguistiques et culturels des populations arabes avec leurs voisins. Les derniers, qui correspondent à ces mots techniques religieux de l'islam, semblent avoir été influencés par les contacts avec leur environnement. Ils viennent de l'hébreu, du judéo-araméen, du syriaque ou directement de la langue des Juifs du Hijaz. Les travaux sur les emprunts coraniques sont anciens. Le dernier ouvrage est celui d'Arthur Jeffery, The Foreign Vocabulary of the Qur'an, 1938. Les savants du siècle passé avaient porté le débat sur le plan idéologique et religieux en cherchant les origines juives ou chrétiennes du Coran. L'apport du judaïsme n'est plus à prouver. Il a pu toucher le Prophète de l'islam et ses compagnons à travers les Juifs du Hijaz, les Ethiopiens chrétiens de la Mekke et le judaïsme de Himyar. Les résultats de ces recherches ont besoin d'être actualisés et complétés. Les progrès du comparatisme, les découvertes linguistiques du XXe siècle et les travaux sur l'hébreu et l'araméen nous invitent à un nouvel examen des emprunts lexicaux coraniques dans une perspective linguistique et historique. "Turkey, Islam, Nationalism, and Modernity" reveals the historical dynamics propelling two centuries of Ottoman and Turkish history. As mounting threats to imperial survival necessitated dynamic responses, ethnolinguistic and religious identities inspired alternative strategies for engaging with modernity. A radical, secularizing current of change competed with a conservative, Islamically committed current. Crises sharpened the differentiation of the two streams, forcing choices between them. The radical current began with the formation of reformist governmental elites and expanded with the advent of 'print capitalism', symbolized by the privately owned, Ottoman-language newspapers. The radicals engineered the 1908 Young Turk revolution, ruled empire and republic until 1950, made secularism a lasting 'belief system', and still retain powerful positions. The conservative current gained impetus from three history-making Islamic renewal movements, those of Mevlana Halid, Said Nursi, and Fethullah Gulen. Powerful under the empire, Islamic conservatives did not regain control of government until the 1980s. By then they, too, had their own influential media. Findley's reassessment of political, economic, social and cultural history reveals the dialectical interaction between radical and conservative currents of change, which alternately clashed and converged to shape late Ottoman and republican Turkish history.
