Les premières données se rapportant à ces sels datent de Berélius. Ultérieurement, d'autres recherches furent entreprises, mais nos connaissances sur ces composés demeurèrent assez imprécises et parfois même contradictoires. Il nous a donc paru intéressant d'entreprendre sur ce sujet une étude comparable à celle effectuée par M. le professeur Guérin, sur les arséniates alcalino-terreux en établissant à la température ambiante et à 60 degrés les diagrammes d'équilibre suivants : BaO - As2O3 -H2O ; SrO - As2O3 - H2O ; CaO - As2O3 - H2O afin de déterminer avec certitude quels sont les arsénites susceptibles d'exister ainsi que la signification exacte qu'il convient d'attribuer aux termes de pyro- et métaarsénites employés autrefois pour caractériser certains arsénites hydratés. Ce premier travail a été rendu délicat par la facilité avec laquelle les alcalino-terreux se carbonatent en présence de l'anhydride carbonique de l'air, par la possibilité de leur oxydation à la température de 60 degrés et par l'attaque non négligeable du verre des flacons par les solutions de baryte, de strontiane et de chaux. En présence de composés définis, nous avons pu étudier les propriétés de ces sels, en particulier leur comportement vis-à-vis de l'eau ou de la chaleur ainsi que leur oxydation.
