Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Aucun système n'est offert actuellement afin de concevoir un programme d'injection proprement dit tel que raisonné par un expert. Pourtant, l'optimisation des solutions, la réduction des coûts en chantier et l'élimination des choix inadaptés nécessitent une méthodologie et ce, en fonction des données de terrain. Dans le domaine informatique, seuls les systèmes à base de connaissances permettent de travailler avec l'incertain et des données empiriques tels que rencontrés en injection. L'application de ces systèmes à l'injection de coulis semble une perspective très prometteuse. Précédant la création de ce système, le savoir-faire et les connaissances de l'injection doivent être structurés suivant une approche méthodologique. C'est-à-dire mettre sur papier le raisonnement, qui se fait de manière automatique ou inconsciente chez un expert, pour en arriver à une solution adaptée aux conditions du terrain. C'est cette partie du développement, appliquée aux milieux fissurés, qui a été étudiée au cours de cette thèse. Plus particulièrement, la fonction de l'approche méthodologique proposée est de définir certaines variables techniques (composantes du coulis, méthodes de forage et d'injection, paramètres de contrôle en chantier) selon les variables du milieu (rocher, structures de béton ou de maçonnerie) où seront exécutés les travaux. Ainsi, un des objectifs est la structuration des variables du milieu par une hiérarchisation suivant leur importance sur la qualité de l'injection et l'attribution de valeurs possibles à ces variables. Enfin, l'approche méthodologique a été validée à l'aide de cas pratiques et a été en partie intégrée dans un programme informatique.

In other disciplines knowledge about surface properties and the background of bonding energies is also far from satisfactory; nevertheless there are many important· applications in concrete engineering, where adhesion is necessary for success and durability. Book excerpt: Ce travail de recherche porte sur l’étude des propriétés de transfert et de la propagation de coulis de ciment dans les sols injectés. Tout d’abord, nous développons un dispositif expérimental spécifique d’injection d’éprouvettes de faible hauteur. Ce dernier vise à améliorer la compréhension de l’écoulement et du transport de ces fluides complexes dans des milieux granulaires. Il nous permet notamment de souligner un phénomène de filtration de particules de ciment par le milieu granulaire. Puis, nous étudions l’influence de paramètres significatifs sur le processus de l’injection (rhéologie du coulis, pression d’injection, débit d’injection, distance d’injection, porosité, perméabilité). Nous proposons, ensuite, de coupler ce dispositif à des techniques d’analyse d’image pour décrire le comportement hydrodynamique du sol injecté durant la propagation du coulis dans l’éprouvette. Dans une deuxième phase, nous discutons de la répartition du ciment filtré dans nos échantillons injectés grâce à la gammadensimétrie. Nous estimons l’efficacité du procédé d’injection, d’un point de vue propriété de transfert, à partir de mesures de perméabilité au gaz à l’état durci. Nous complétons cette étude par une analyse du réseau poreux obtenu suite à l’injection, à l’aide de la porosimétrie au mercure, d’observations et de microanalyses au MEB. Nous montrons également une corrélation entre la structure poreuse du sol injecté et l’évolution de la perméabilité, en employant une formulation issue de l’approche de Katz-Thompson. Enfin, nous enrichissons l’outil de simulation numérique du laboratoire d’une nouvelle loi d’évolution de la perméabilité prenant mieux en compte cette filtration.
