Book excerpt: Cinq à dix % des enfants d'âge scolaire souffriraient de dyslexie, un désordre spécifique de l'apprentissage du langage écrit que nous définissons comme l'incapacité à apprendre à lire en dépit d'une intelligence normale, de l'absence de déficits perceptifs ou neurologiques, d'une scolarité et d'un environnement socio-éducatif normaux, situant ces enfants à deux écart-types de la moyenne des enfants de même âge chronologique (OMS, 1993). Nous savons qu'une proportion non négligeable de ces enfants dyslexiques a manifesté un retard dans l'apparition du langage oral à des degrés divers, que la dyslexie s'ancrerait dans un trouble de la perception auditive dans 70% des cas et que, quand un tel déficit perceptif n'est pas observé, ces enfants manifesteraient des difficultés subtiles en ce qui concerne leurs habiletés métaphonologiques définies comme la capacité à discriminer, conserver en mémoire et manipuler les sons du langage oral. L'abondante littérature démontrant la nécessité de maîtriser ces habiletés phonologiques pour parvenir à apprendre à lire, a suggéré que, secondairement à une déficience constitutionnelle de la perception phonétique, les enfants dyslexiques formeraient des représentations phonologiques défectueuses d'où résulterait, en dernier lieu, l'incapacité à établir une correspondance entre les phonèmes et les graphèmes. Enfin, plusieurs arguments émanant de différents champs de recherche, suggèrent l'existence de défaillances des mécanismes visuels chez ces enfants dyslexiques, tels qu'un déficit perceptif des stimuli visuels à faible contraste et changements rapides. Nous nous sommes appuyés sur l'hypothèse du déficit du traitement temporel défendue par Paula Tallal qui postule que ces différents niveaux auraient une base unique résidant dans un déficit du cerveau à traiter les stimuli auditifs ou visuels brefs et à changements rapides ainsi que sur la démonstration expérimentale que la morphologie cérébrale du cortex sensitif chez l'animal se modifierait par stimulations répétées des récepteurs sensoriels...
