Mientras que sobre la familia, y sobre todo en relación a la praxis sacramental o la oración pueden encontrar numerosas obras que les ayuden a vivir esas áreas de la vida en forma inspirada por el evangelio, el trabajo profesional, que ocupa la mayoría del tiempo de las personas en etapa de vida activa, hay un vacío de reflexión y orientación (y acaso también de valoración) desde la perspectiva cristiana.Este libro va destinado a los laicos cristianos, para llenar en lo posible ese vacío, con la pretensión de ayudar a una toma de conciencia del profundo sentido de su actividad profesional y a servir de estímulo a vivir con ilusión y creatividad evangélica el compromiso con su trabajo profesional.En el Concilio Vaticano II, al referirse a las posibles contribuciones de los laicos en la acción evangelizadora, quedaron claramente diferenciadas dos áreas de su influencia: por un lado, su contribución evangelizadora en el ámbito de la Iglesia -colaborando con la Jerarquía- sea en tareas formativas, o litúrgicas; o en alguna de las obras eclesiales de solidaridad social; o por su implicación en organismos consultivos o directivos diocesanos, parroquiales, o en comunidades o asociaciones de fieles. Pero una segunda área de acción evangelizadora de los laicos -que el Concilio calificó de específica y prioritaria de ellos -es su influencia en el mundo, como "fermento en la masa". Su influencia en las comunidades familiar, profesional, ciudadana, científica, artística, política, etc.. Y en concreto su vivencia de la espiritualidad cristiana en el trabajo profesional.Esta última es la cuestión que se aborda en este libro. Se informa y se anima a los laicos para que tomen más conciencia de su responsabilidad y posible contribución evangelizadora a partir del ejercicio de su peculiar vivencia del trabajo profesional.Doce laicos de distintas actividades profesionales ofrecen su testimonio sobre cómo están tratando de lograr una vivencia cristiana de sus carismas en el ejercicio de su trabajo profesional en la sociedad civil.

Pero estos potenciales pueden padecer problemas de diferentes tipos. ¿Tiene o no importancia para la vivencia de una espiritualidad profunda que estos potenciales humanos estén presentes y funcionen de forma sana? ¿Qué consecuencias podrá tener para la vivencia de la espiritualidad que el funcionamiento de esos potenciales psicológicos pueda implicar algún tipo de trastorno de la personalidad? Y en el caso de que no haya patologías, ¿puede afirmarse que una profundización del crecimiento personal psicológico –con el fluir sano de los diversos potenciales implicados– tenderá a enriquecer el crecimiento espiritual, y a poder ofrecer un testimonio que favorezca la influencia evangelizadora? Estas son algunas de las preguntas que intenta responder el libro. En él se mostrará que las relaciones entre el crecimiento personal psicológico y el espiritual tenderán a ser de ayuda mutua. El incremento de salud mental será un buen aliado para la profundización en la espiritualidad. Y ésta lo será a su vez para profundizar en la salud mental o autorrealización, aunque el libro se dedica –ante todo- al punto anterior.
