Book excerpt: Japanese bamboo baskets have a very long history. Until the 16th century, they were primarily utilitarian and rustic items. Those with an aesthetic value were imported from China. Mirror of the Confucian values, they displayed perfectly symmetrical shapes and a surprisingly regular weaving. The turning point came from the codification of the tea ceremony in the 16th century. Due to their extreme refinement, the Japanese bamboo vases ( hanakago ), containing floral arrangements (ikebana) are elevated to the rank of works of art. The masters of the golden era, founders of this art, constituted in dynasties, established a special relationship between the artist and the patron. But one artist will be particularly honored, Iizuka Rokansai (1890-1958), called the "Picasso of the basket" with his forty pieces. The post-war period is crucial in the diffusion of this art across the world, especially in the USA, in private collections or museums. This resulted in the use of new shapes by contemporary artists, but also in attempts at blending bamboo with new materials. The main question is then about the artistic status of contemporary or modern artists whose work requires great technical and artisanal skills. Inspired by classical formalism, which vocabulary was set up thoroughly by Iizuka Rokansai, the baskets of young contemporary artists are now becoming sculptures. Devoid of any function, they open up a unique artistic field.

Book excerpt: Exhibition catalogue featuring works by 12 contemporary bamboo artists from the Oita region of Japan Fully illustrated throughout with accompanying biographies on each artist Oita Prefecture - and the spa town of Beppu in particular - has held a central position in the development and dissemination of the bamboo arts in Japan for more than a century. This cottage industry was promoted by central government at the end of the Meiji era (1868-1912) as it looked for ways to export handicrafts for display at world's fairs. Craftsmen were encouraged to produce high-quality pieces, some of their creations attaining the level of real artworks. The success of this enterprise relied fundamentally on the transmission of knowledge and the education of weavers in an academic setting. The first vocational school to offer this kind of training was the Beppu Advanced Industrial Arts and Technology Institute founded in 1902, where artists working in the field continue to be provided with the skills required. From the early twentieth century to Japan's entry into the Second World War, the Oita area's industry in luxury bamboo objects prospered and more than twenty craftsmen from the region had their works shown in museums, both in Japan and abroad. The artist Shono Shounsai (1904-1974), who became the first practitioner of his discipline to be named a Living National Treasure, undeniably blazed the trail for the production of contemporary works, not only by training many of the artists widely recognized today, but also with his sculptural and 'modern' approach, nourished by a finely honed appreciation for design. Many artists of the Oita region have chosen to follow this approach, as may be seen in the works shown in this exhibition catalogue. Text in English with an introduction also in Japanese and French.

By far the most vitally creative group of artists working in Japan today, modern print-makers are truly international in appeal. Although they owe much of their heritage to the famous ukiyoe techniques of the past, they depart from their forebears in at least two important respects. In the first place, whereas in the ancient ukiyoe tradition a print was the joint production of three men— the artist-designer, the artisan who carved the blocks, and the printer—these modern artists perform all these functions themselves, thus satisfying their demands for individual artistic expression at every step of the creative process. Another distinguishing feature of this artistic school is that its inspiration is derived neither solely from its own Japanese past nor solely from the West. This book carefully traces the history of the modern print movement through detailed discussions of the life and work of twenty-nine of its most noteworthy and representative artists.
