Book Synopsis Cadmium in the Aquatic Environment by : Jerome O. Nriagu
Download or read book Cadmium in the Aquatic Environment written by Jerome O. Nriagu and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1987-08-12 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a comprehensive account of current research on the chemistry and toxicology of cadmium in natural waters. Discusses the sources, distribution, and fate of cadmium in aquatic ecosystems, including coverage of the biocycling and exotoxicity of cadmium to materia and fresh water biota. A succinct review of the analytical chemistry of cadmium in natural waters is also included. The contributors emphasize general principles rather than comprehensive documentation, making this volume accessible to a wide audience. The technical information helps provide the scientific rationale needed in the continuing effort to establish water quality criteria and standards for cadmium.

Download or read book Cadmium in the Environment written by Lars Friberg and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this report is upon information essential to the understanding of the toxic action of cadmium and the relationship between dose (exposure) and effects on human beings and animals. The therapy of cadmium poisoning has not been discussed. This review on cadmium in the environment has been performed under a contract between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Environmental Hygiene of the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. The report is intended to serve as a background paper for a future Air Quality Criteria document on cadmium. Therefore, particular attention has been given to information relevant for the evaluation of risks due to long-term exposure to low concentrations of cadmium. Acute effects from short-term exposure to high concentrations are dealt with briefly. In vitro studies without bearing on the main problem have not been dealt with. The report is not limited to effects from exposure via inhalation. Newly accessible information, showing that large populations may be exposed considerably via the oral route, can elucidate chronic effects of cadmium in general. Man and animals can be victims of secondary exposure through vehicles such as food and water which have been contaminated by cadmium in air.

Book Synopsis Cadmium Hazards to Fish, Wildlife, and Invertebrates by : Ronald Eisler
Download or read book Cadmium Hazards to Fish, Wildlife, and Invertebrates written by Ronald Eisler and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contamination of the environment by cadmium, a relatively rare heavy metal, is increasing and is especially severe in the vicinity of smelters and urban industrialized areas. Very low concentrations of cadmium have been implicated as the cause of numerous deleterious effects to fish and wildlife, especially aquatic life. This report briefly reviews ecological and toxicological aspects of cadmium, with emphasis on natural resources, and provides recommendations for the protection of sensitive species of wildlife and aquatic biota. Subtopics include: enviornmental chemiatry; background concentrations in terrestrial and aquatic organisms; toxic and sublethal effects, including bioaccumulation; and teratogenic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic properties. parag Keywords: contaminants; natural resources; toxicity; fishes; wildlife; cadmium; heavy metals; metabolism; sublethal effects

This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the authors summarise basic and experimental knowledge on sources and toxicity of cadmium and overview mechanisms of toxicity and detoxification for various trophic aquatic organisms exposed to cadmium different routes, which will assist ecological risk assessments involving cadmium toxicity. Cadmium is known to be both extremely toxic and ubiquitous in natural environments. It exists most commonly as a trace constituent in natural ecosystems, where its natural occurrence appears to not cause harm to the environment. However, it can be mobilised by a number of processes especially human activities. Anthropogenic sources of cadmium have contributed large amounts of this potentially toxic metal to the water cycle with ultimate impacts on aquatic ecosystems.
