Book Synopsis Solidification of Containerless Undercooled Melts by : Dieter M. Herlach
Download or read book Solidification of Containerless Undercooled Melts written by Dieter M. Herlach and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-05-21 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All metallic materials are prepared from the liquid state as their parent phase. Solidification is therefore one of the most important phase transformation in daily human life. Solidification is the transition from liquid to solid state of matter. The conditions under which material is transformed determines the physical and chemical properties of the as-solidified body. The processes involved, like nucleation and crystal growth, are governed by heat and mass transport. Convection and undercooling provide additional processing parameters to tune the solidification process and to control solid material performance from the very beginning of the production chain. To develop a predictive capability for efficient materials production the processes involved in solidification have to be understood in detail. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the solidification of metallic melts processed and undercooled in a containerless manner by drop tube, electromagnetic and electrostatic levitation, and experiments in reduced gravity. The experiments are accompanied by model calculations on the influence of thermodynamic and hydrodynamic conditions that control selection of nucleation mechanisms and modify crystal growth development throughout the solidification process.

Book Synopsis Rapid Solidification Processing of Iron-base Alloys for Structural Applications by :
Download or read book Rapid Solidification Processing of Iron-base Alloys for Structural Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The response of iron-base alloys to rapid solidification is reviewed with an emphasis on the effects of processing on the microstructure and mechanical property behavior. The processing topics addressed are powder atomization, powder consolidation, joining, and thermal-mechanical exposure. The value of rapid solidification processing (RSP) lies in the ability to promote compositional homogeneity and retention of fine and stable (to high temperatures) microstructures. Achieving the maximum benefit from RSP requires proper application of the basic principles of composition control and rapid crystallization. This investigation has disclosed two very important facets of the RSP approach that can be applied using current technologies. Dissociated oxygen appears to play a significant role in stabilizing microstructural features. In conjunction with oxygen, vacancies trapped during crystallization provide a very stable matrix dispersion for enhanced strengthening. With a fundamental understanding of the response of iron-base alloys to RSP, alloys can be designed that will have substantially better properties and performance than their conventionally processed counterparts. 77 refs., 94 figs., 14 tabs.

Download or read book Semi-solid Processing of Alloys written by David H. Kirkwood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-27 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semisolid metallurgy (SSM) is now some 37-years-old in terms of time from its conception and ?rst reduction to practice in the laboratory. In the intervening years, there has been a steadily growing body of research on the subject and the beginning of signi?cant industrial applications. The overall ?eld of SSM comprises today a large number of speci?c process routes, almost all of which fall in the category of either “Rheocasting” or Thi- casting.” The former begins with liquid metal and involves agitation during partial solidi?cation followed by forming. The latter begins with solid metal of suitable structure and involves heating to the desired fraction solid and forming. Research over the past 37 years, and particularly over the last decade, has provided a detailed picture of process fundamentals and led to a wide range of speci?c SSM processes and process innovations. Industrial studies and actual p- duction experience are providing a growing picture of the process advantages and limitations. At this time, the conditions for eventual wide adoption of SSM appear favorable, both for nonferrous and ferrous alloys. It must, however, be recognized that major innovations, such as SSM become adopted only slowly by industries where capital costsarehigh, pro?tmarginsaremodest, andfailuretomeetcustomercommitments carries a high penalty.

Book Synopsis Solidification of Iron Base Alloys at Large Degrees of Undercooling by : M. C. Flemings
Download or read book Solidification of Iron Base Alloys at Large Degrees of Undercooling written by M. C. Flemings and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes one of several related research activities on inclusions. The work is primarily on levitation melted and rapidly solidified (including splat-cooled) samples. It deals with effects of solidification variables on (1) dendrite and inclusion structures, (2) influence of high temperature homogenization treatments on inclusions, and (3) influence of inclusions on fracture behavior of iron. The research is an outgrowth of a program on undercooled iron base alloys, that has had important technological, as well as fundamental, findings. Dendrite arm spacing is of major importance in determining properties of castings and of wrought material produced from cast ingots and so determination of the mechanism of establishment of dendrite arm spacing has been of considerable applied as well theoretical interest. Book Synopsis Rapid Solidification and Consolidation of Iron Base Alloys by : R. G. Bourdeau
Download or read book Rapid Solidification and Consolidation of Iron Base Alloys written by R. G. Bourdeau and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapidly solidified powders of iron base and steel compositions were produced and consolidated for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for use on a companion ONR program. A total of seven compositions were converted to rapidly solidified powder in a P & W experimental rotary atomization device. The powders were screened, canned in extrusion containers, extruded to bar stock and delivered to MIT. Manganese containing TRIP steels and an iron base alloy were produced with refined structures where the contaminants in the steel such as sulfides were finely dispersed. Lanthanum added to the alloy steel gettered the phosphorus and refined phosphides as well as oxysulfides were produced for grain coarsening resistance. The latter steel is being evaluated in sharp-crack k sub IC toughness and k sub ISCC stress corrosion resistance. In addition, Fe-Ni base compositions were produced which are being used to study the effect rapid solidification in as solidified material.
