Many of the most active practical workers in pathol ogy, however, 'have never given their unqualified assent to these views; and particularly has this been the case in Investigation and observation have thus been greatly stimulated; many new discoveries have been made and theories advanced. Book Synopsis Tuberculosis, Or Flesh Eating a Cause of Consumption by : Josiah Oldfield
Download or read book Tuberculosis, Or Flesh Eating a Cause of Consumption written by Josiah Oldfield and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tuberculosis, or Flesh Eating a Cause of Consumption: With an Appendix Relating to the Objections Raised at the Sanitary Congress, 1892 Feeling so strongly that the curse of consumption was so intimately interlinked with wrong living, and especially wrong eating, I tried to find out how far facts would bear out this theory. Starting with the great Glasgow case of 1889, I found that the farther I went, the more did the evidence emphasise the truth of my position. I do not venture for a moment to maintain that flesheating is the sole cause of consumption, or those other diseases which spring from the presence of the specific bacillus within the system. All I have tried to show is that there is an unbroken chain of evidence to prove that a relation does exist between them, i.e., not that flesh-eating is the sole cause, but that it is an important factor in the causation of consumption. If the consideration of the great risk that is run by eating the flesh which is supplied to our markets will lead readers to weigh the claims of Vegetarianism, and adopting it from health reasons, bring them at length to the realisation of the true position of man in nature and his ethical relation to his fellow creatures, I shall be abundantly satisfied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Tuberculosis, the Constitutional Origin of Consumption and Scrofula In the chapter on etiology also, it will be observed, that I have deviated very widely from conventional usage. I must refer the reader to the views there taken, and to the arrangement of the difi'erent denominations of causes, to form his opinion of the propriety of the course adopted. My desire has been to bring the prominent points into broad relief, to place the subject in its true light, in reference to the existing state of science, and to avoid mere theoretical disquisition. I have more especially endeavoured to discriminate between the causes of the disease of the blood and the causes of localdisease; a distinction, as I think, ofthe ut most importance, yet hitherto little regarded and often overlooked. The work, from its nature and scope, does not include the causes of the development of local disease. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons on Tuberculosis and Consumption for the Household: For the Household, Showing Hot to Prevent Tuberculosis, How to Recognize Its First Symptoms, How to Win Back Health The chief purpose of the lessons is to indicate the course of procedure that the competent physician will probably follow, and to outline in a general way the pmgram he may be expected to map out for his patient. It will be found, also, that considerable space has been given to making plain the how and why, for I have felt that if the reasons for the various steps are understood, one will not only be enabled to select one's physician friend and counselor to better advantage, but if the pursuit of health is taken up understandingly, it will be much easier and pleasanter to accept and follow the rules of living formulated by one 's physician. It is a common statement that one seventh of all deaths are due to it in some of its varied forms. Its prominent characteristics are the destruction of portions of the lungs or intestines and the rapid or gradual wasting of the other tissues with the accompanying loss of vital strength, ending in death. Hence the appropriateness of the name consumption. The above mentioned symptoms are the most striking manifestations of a general diseased condi tion known as tuberculosis. It is called tuberculosis because in the diseased parts are found new growths in the form of rounded masses or nodules, known as tubercles.
