Book Synopsis Efficiency Criteria for Nationalised Industries (Routledge Revivals) by : Alec Nove
Download or read book Efficiency Criteria for Nationalised Industries (Routledge Revivals) written by Alec Nove and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-11-17 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1973, Efficiency Criteria for Nationalised Industries asks by what criteria we should judge the efficiency of nationalised industries, what we mean by saying they should be run commercially and where the public interest should lie. In this work, Professor Nove believes we answer these questions incorrectly due to a lack of understanding of economic theory and a desire to relate real world economics to that of the text book. The author says many economists, in a world of indivisibilities, complementarities and systems, persist in thinking in terms of one-dimensional, fragmented marginalism. Professor Nove, who is known for his writings on the Soviet economy, raises many points relevant to the East as well as the West. His work contributes to the economics of socialism, while also making the case for greater realism in economic theory in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public Sector Economics: Made Simple introduces the reader, step by step, clearly and methodically, to the concepts and principles of public sector economics. The functions and finance of central government, local authorities, and nationalized industries are examined within the framework of a national economy. Examples are given largely from the British economy but international comparisons are made. A large number of tables and diagrams are also provided so as to relate the theory to the real world. Comprised of 21 chapters, this book discusses the theory and practice of public finance, with emphasis on public expenditure, taxation, and the national debt. Fiscal policy with its economic, social, and political objectives is also considered and viewed in relation to monetary policy and prices and incomes policy. After an overview of economic systems and models, the book focuses on allocation of resources and provision of public goods; public expenditure in Britain; the theory of taxation and the tax system; taxes on income, profits, consumption, and capital; and taxable capacity, incidence of taxation, and the tax burden. Fiscal policy is analyzed in relation to economic growth, standard of living, and distribution of income and wealth. This monograph is intended for economists and students taking economics-related courses.
Book Synopsis Making the patient-consumer by : Alex Mold
Download or read book Making the patient-consumer written by Alex Mold and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifty years, British patients have been transformed into consumers. This book considers how and why the figure of the patient-consumer was brought into being, paying particular attention to the role played by patient organisations. Making the patient-consumer explores the development of patient-consumerism from the 1960s to 2010 in relation to seven key areas. Patient autonomy, representation, complaint, rights, information, voice and choice were all central to the making of the patient-consumer. These concepts were used initially by patient organisations, but by the 1990s the government had taken over as the main actor shaping ideas about patient-consumerism. This volume is the first empirical, historical account of a fundamental shift in modern British health policy and practice. The book will be of use to historians, public policy analysts and all those attempting to better understand the nature of contemporary healthcare.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Regulation in the UK by : Daniel Fitzpatrick
Download or read book The Politics of Regulation in the UK written by Daniel Fitzpatrick and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the discourse of regulatory crisis in the UK and examines why, despite the increasing contestation of the principles underpinning the regulatory state, its institutions and practices continue to be firmly embedded within the governance of the British state. It considers its implications for our understanding of the contemporary nature of the British state, and to the study of regulation which is no longer confined to the domain of low politics, populated by technocrats, but is scrutinised by elected politicians, and the subject of the front pages rather than the financial pages. The author sets the British regulatory tradition in a wider context, both spatially, in terms of the challenges presented by Europeanisation, and temporally, critically analysing the process of crisis construction in the narratives of neoliberalism and participatory democracy in the contemporary era.

Book Synopsis Consumer Politics in Postwar Japan by : Patricia L. Maclachlan
Download or read book Consumer Politics in Postwar Japan written by Patricia L. Maclachlan and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-26 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing comparisons to the United States and Britain, this book examines Japan's postwar consumer protection movement. Organized largely by and for housewives and spurred by major cases of price gouging and product contamination, the movement led to the passage of basic consumer protection legislation in 1968. Although much of the story concerns the famous "iron triangle" of big business, national bureaucrats, and conservative party politics, Maclachlan takes a broader perspective. She points to the importance of activity at the local level, the role of minority parties, the limited utility of the courts, and the place of lawyers and academics in providing access to power. These mild social strategies have resulted in a significant amount of consumer protection.
