Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keep the project on schedule is one of the most widely understood goals in the construction industry. How does one accomplish this completely subjective statement in a complex urban freeway renewal project like the I-235 Reconstruction? A fully integrated computer-based Program Master schedule should not only be developed, but also should be updated, customized, and implemented on a regular basis. Updating the schedule keeps the schedule with the latest project status; customizing the schedule satisfies clients' different levels of demands; implementing the schedule makes users of it. These three sequential steps help to make management decisions and thus end up helping a project keep on schedule. The objective of this thesis is to detail key elements involved in updating, customizing, and implementing an urban freeway renewal project schedule.

Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 413: Techniques for Effective Highway Construction Projects in Congested Urban Areas explores a diverse set of techniques designed to address highway construction challenges in congested urban areas such as high-traffic volumes, utility conflicts, complex right-of-way acquisition issues, a diverse stakeholder base, and watchful news media. The report includes four case studies designed to help illustrate effective construction practices in congested urban areas.
Book Synopsis Project Development Methodologies for Reconstruction of Urban Freeways and Expressways by : James B. Saag
Download or read book Project Development Methodologies for Reconstruction of Urban Freeways and Expressways written by James B. Saag and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1999 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis presents a review of the current practices associated with the techniques and policies employed by state and local transportation agencies to address the many project development issues required for the reconstruction of existing urban and suburban freeways and expressways. This topic is of special interest because there is a need to reconstruct many highway facilities that have been in existence for over 40 years. The need arises both from the deterioration of the infrastructure and from changes in capacity requirements. This synthesis will be of interest to state and local highway design engineers, traffic engineers, finance and contracting specialists, and contracting personnel in these agencies. It will also be of interest to consultants who are engaged in freeway/expressway reconstruction projects. While many of the project development methodologies in practice for reconstruction of urban and suburban freeways and expressways are similar to those used for new construction, there are unique differences that apply primarily to the reconstruction of major urban highway facilities. This report of the Transportation Research Board highlights the similarities and differences in the planning and management of projects as well as in contracting and financing innovations. Methods for effectively managing traffic during the reconstruction process are important to the process, as are traffic control procedures in the work zone. Public participation and public information dissemination related to traffic changes are vitally important to the effective completion of a reconstruction project. Other aspects, such as the design process, including the use of 3-D and 4-D visualization, pavement renewal procedures, environmental impact mitigation and enhancement activities, that are considered in the process are also addressed.

Download or read book A Multi-project Scheduling Procedure for Transportation Projects written by James E. Rowings and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) has been requiring Critical Path Method (CPM) schedules on some larger or more schedule sensitive projects. The Office of Construction's expectations for enhanced project control and improved communication of project objectives have not been fully met by the use of CPM. Recognizing that the current procedures might not be adequate for all projects, IDOT sponsored a research project to explore the state-of-the-art in transportation scheduling and identify opportunities for improvement. The first phase of this project identified a technique known as the Linear Scheduling Method (LSM) as an alternative to CPM on certain highway construction projects. LSM graphically displays the construction process with respect to the location and the time in which each activity occurs. The current phase of this project was implemented to allow the research team the opportunity to evaluate LSM on all small groups of diverse projects. Unlike the first phase of the project, the research team was closely involved in the project from early in the planning phase throughout the completion of the projects. The research strongly suggests that the linear scheduling technique has great potential as a project management tool for both contractors and IDOT personnel. However, before this technique can become a viable weapon in the project management arsenal, a software application needs to be developed. This application should bring to linear scheduling a degree of functionality as rich and as comprehensive as that found in microcomputer based CPM software on the market today. The research team recommends that the IDOT extend this research effort to include the development of a linear scheduling application.
