Deterioration of wood, concrete, and steel piling systems is estimated to cost the U.S. military and civilian marine and waterfront communities over $1 billion annually. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites represent an alternative construction material without many of the performance disadvantages of traditional materials as described above. A proposal was submitted to develop composite piling systems under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Construction Productivity Advancement Research (CPAR) Program. This CPAR Project developed, tested, and demonstrated high-performance polymer composite fender, load-bearing, and sheet pile (bulkheads) systems for marine/waterfront civil engineering applications. In phase one, mechanical, operating, and physical performance requirements were established. In phase two, laboratory tests were conducted to assess the preliminary designs. Promising designs were further developed and tested. Selected fender piles that met the established requirements, as determined by the laboratory tests, were installed in a field demonstration. Development and adoption of industry consensus specifications and standards for composite piling systems was initiated. The Composites Institute and member manufacturers have promoted and will continue to promote the commercialization of the composite pilings developed under this project.

Book excerpt: The global response to COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of vigilance and preparedness for infectious diseases, particularly influenza. There is a need for more effective influenza vaccines and modern manufacturing technologies that are adaptable and scalable to meet demand during a pandemic. The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines has demonstrated what is possible with extensive data sharing, researchers who have the necessary resources and novel technologies to conduct and apply their research, rolling review by regulators, and public-private partnerships. As demonstrated throughout the response to COVID-19, the process of research and development of novel vaccines can be significantly optimized when stakeholders are provided with the resources and technologies needed to support their response. Vaccine Research and Development to Advance Pandemic and Seasonal Influenza Preparedness and Response focuses on how to leverage the knowledge gained from the COVID-19 pandemic to optimize vaccine research and development (R&D) to support the prevention and control of seasonal and pandemic influenza. The committee's findings address four dimensions of vaccine R&D: (1) basic and translational science, (2) clinical science, (3) manufacturing science, and (4) regulatory science.

Book excerpt: An important goal in writing Gratitude For Shoes is to dispel the myth that mountain people are stupid, lazy, feuding "hillbillies," and portray them as the highly intelligent, resourceful and hard-working people they truly are. Survival was never easy for the early settlers in the Great Smoky Mountains. People "made do" with what they had and what they could glean from a rocky garden and hillside corn patch, and from picking wild berries and grapes, canning, preserving and drying food. Sometimes, in order for his family to survive, a man had to resort to making illegal corn liquor. This is a story about growing up in a family of ten children in the immediate post-depression era, living high in the mountains on a steep winding dirt road, eight miles from the nearest town. Much effort has been made to use authentic mountain speech, along with giving details about activities of daily living, including housing, clothing, food, school, work, play, attitudes and customs of the time. A good education was considered an impossible dream, especially for a girl, but Gratitude For Shoes tells how one little barefooted mountain girl overcame almost insurmountable obstacles in order to achieve that goal.

Book excerpt: A standard reference on horse breeds, illustrated and updated Celebrating the animal that has been a stalwart servant to humankind for countless generations, Bonnie Hendricks’s International Encyclopedia of Horse Breeds is the most thorough compilation of horse breeds ever attempted. The nearly four hundred entries, arranged alphabetically, include foundation breeds now extinct as well as extant breeds from across the globe. Each entry details the breed’s origin and background, size, appearance, chief use, and status (rare versus common). A list of breed associations and government departments that supplied data and photographs for the encyclopedia has been fully updated for this edition. With its breadth and depth of coverage, as well as 530 black-and-white and 32 color illustrations, the encyclopedia continues to be a standard international reference.
