Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the construct validity of the Miller Assessment for Preschoolers (MAP)(Miller, 1982; 1988). The ability of the MAP Total Score to distinguish between children with and without delays, and the ability of the Performance Indices to identify distinct areas of Performance were examined using secondary analysis of the data. Two samples of children were tested: one known to have delays in speech and language or in general development (n = 32), and the other without known delays (n = 80). Results indicated that the MAP Total and Item Scores were able to predict group membership, however, the Performance Indices were not supported. Five new factors were created using factor analysis, which appeared to distinguish among the groups. The results support the use of the MAP as an indicator of delay, however, the MAP Performance Indices were not supported for use by therapists.
