Book excerpt: Many experiments have provided evidence for neutrino flavor oscillations, and consequently that neutrinos are in fact massive which is not predicted by the Standard Model. Many experiments have been built to constrain the parameters which determine flavor oscillations, and for only three flavors of neutrinos the mixing parameters are well known, aside from the CP violating phase for two mass hierarchies. Most experimental data can be well explained by mixing between three flavors of neutrinos, however oscillation anomalies from several experiments, most notably from LSND (Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector) have suggested that there may be additional flavors of neutrinos beyond those in the Standard Model. One of the focuses of this dissertation is the possibility of adding new flavors of right-handed neutrinos to the Standard Model to account for oscillation anomalies, and exploring the consequences of sterile neutrinos for other experiments.Sensitivities to a particular model of sterile neutrinos at the future Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment will be determined, in which CP effects introduced by the sterile neutrinos play an important role. It will be demonstrated how, by combining data from the Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment along with data from Daya Bay and T2K, it is possible to provide evidence for or rule out this model of sterile neutrinos.A chi-squared analysis is used to determine the significance of measuring the effects of sterile neutrinos in IceCube; it will be shown that it may be possible to extract evidence for sterile neutrinos from high energy atmospheric neutrinos in IceCube. Furthermore it will be demonstrated how measuring neutrino flavor ratios from astrophysical sources in IceCube can help to distinguish between the three flavor scenario and a beyond the Standard Model (BSM) scenario involving sterile neutrinos. Measuring astrophysical as well as atmospheric neutrinos can evince the existence of sterile neutrinos.Despite the fact that the mixing parameters for the three Standard Model neutrino flavors are well known, some implications of neutrino interactions for flavor oscillations are not well understood. Neutrinos can interact with one another in a similar way to how neutrinos interact with normal matter. Neutrino-neutrino forward scattering can lead to a flavor swap for the propagating neutrino, or the propagating neutrino can retain its original flavor. These interactions contribute an effective potential to the Hamiltonian describing the flavor evolution which depends on a background neutrino density. In normal matter the neutrino density is very low which allows for neutrino-neutrino interactions to be ignored, however these interactions can dominate over vacuum and normal matter interactions in very dense environments such as core-collapse supernovae and early universe scenarios.Neutrino-neutrino interactions give rise to terms quadratic in neutrino densities in the equations of motion, and can give rise to what is called collective oscillations resulting from interference with vacuum and normal matter effects. The non-linearity has made the problem of solving for collective oscillations analytically intractable without simplifying assumptions, and has made this a problem relegated to supercomputer simulations. This dissertation is concerned with analytic methods for solving the equations of motion for core-collapse neutrino propagation. It will be shown here that, by keeping only $\nu\nu$-interactions at initial distances outward from the supernova core, it is possible to solve the equations of motion by factorizing vacuum oscillations and the effects of $\nu\nu$-interactions. Furthermore, it will be shown how using this factorization scheme it is possible to predict where flavor oscillations become unstable. This is an important development because it can allow one to predict the neutrino flux in Earth experiments from core-collapse supernovae, while at the same time gaining an understanding of the underlying physics involved in complicated processes such as collective oscillations and the rapid growth of oscillations at medium range distances. Using the factorization ansatz together with a measured supernova spectrum it is possible in principle to determine the thermal spectra inside of the supernova.

All relevant parameters entering the oscillation probabilities (standard and non-standard) are considered at once, in order to take into account possible cancellations and degeneracies between them. We find that the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment will significantly improve over current constraints for most NSI parameters. Most notably, it will be able to rule out the so-called LMA-dark solution, still compatible with current oscillation data, and will be sensitive to off-diagonal NSI parameters at the level of [epsilon] ~ $ \mathcal{O} $ (0.05 - 0.5). We also identify two degeneracies among standard and non-standard parameters, which could be partially resolved by combining T2HK and DUNE data.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to look for new phenomena in the IceCube atmospheric neutrino spectrum. First we revisit the high energy neutrino cross section in the perturbative QCD (pQCD) framework and perform a new next-to-next-to leading order calculation with new parton distribution functions. We further use the color dipole model of the nucleon and the assumption that cross sections behave asymptotically as $\ln^2 (s)$ to extend the prediction of neutrino cross sections beyond pQCD. We then study the problem of neutrino oscillations with non-coherent interactions and solve the problem in the density matrix formalism efficiently by representing the neutrino state in terms of the SU(N) generators. This technique is used in three new physics scenarios: sterile neutrinos, non-standard interactions, Lorentz violation. Besides studying the phenomenology of this models in the atmospheric flux, the effect of Lorentz violation in the astrophysical flavor ratio is also discussed. We find that, given the current bounds, large deviations from the standard (1:1:1) expectation can be found. Having developed in detail the sterile neutrino phenomenology in IceCube a search for sterile neutrino signatures in the IceCube-86 2011 data is performed. No significant evidence for an eV-sterile neutrino is found and strong limits are put in the mixing angle improving by more than an order of magnitude bounds from $\nu_\mu$ disappearance.

We show that this tension, if it persists, can be understood in the framework of non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI). While neutral current NSI (non-standard matter effects) are disfavored by atmospheric neutrinos, a new charged current coupling between tau neutrinos and nucleons can fit the MINOS data without violating other constraints. In particular, we show that loop-level contributions to flavor-violating [tau] decays are sufficiently suppressed. However, conflicts with existing bounds could arise once the effective theory considered here is embedded into a complete renormalizable model. We predict the future sensitivity of the T2K and NOvA experiments to the NSI parameter region favored by the MINOS fit, and show that both experiments are excellent tools to test the NSI interpretation of the MINOS data.

Book excerpt: At the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, neutrino interactions are observed across a broad energy range extending from ~ 5 GeV to ~ 1 PeV. Above ~ 100 TeV, neutrinos primarily originate from distant astrophysical objects whose identity is yet unknown. At lower energies, most neutrinos result from cosmic-ray interactions in Earth's atmosphere. In this work, two studies of contained neutrino interactions in IceCube are presented. In the first study, three years of IceCube data recorded from May 2010 to May 2013 are analyzed to measure the flavor composition of astrophysical neutrinos in the energy range from 35 TeV to 1.9 PeV. The flavor composition is found to be consistent with the ratio of ~ (1/3 : 1/3 : 1/3) expected from the oscillation of neutrinos produced by complete pion decay in distant astrophysical sources. Limits are placed on non-standard flavor compositions that could arise in exotic physics scenarios. The energy spectrum of astrophysical neutrinos is also measured and is well-described by a falling power law with index 2.6+-0.15. In the second study, five years of IceCube data from May 2011 to May 2016 are analyzed with improved background rejection and event classification techniques, and the inelasticity in charged-current muon neutrino interactions is reconstructed. Improved limits on the flavor composition of astrophysical neutrinos are obtained, and there is consistency with the expected flavor ratio of ~ (1/3 : 1/3 : 1/3). Additionally, the energy spectrum of astrophysical neutrinos is found to be consistent with a power-law with index 2.62+-0.07 in the energy range from 6.6 TeV to 2.2 PeV. Limits are placed on a power-law flux from a second population of astrophysical sources that may explain the harder power-law index of 2.13+-0.13 found in an IceCube analysis of up-going muons at higher energies. The inelasticity distribution of charged-current muon neutrino interactions is also obtained and is found to be consistent with the calculation of Cooper-Sarkar et al. across an energy range from 1 TeV to 100 TeV. The inelasticity distribution can also be used measure the neutrino to antineutrino ratio of the atmospheric neutrino flux. A scaling factor on the muon neutrino to antineutrino flux ratio calculated by Honda et al. is found to be 0.77+0.44-0.25 in the energy range from 770 GeV to 21 TeV. Lastly, the inelasticity distribution can also be used to perform an indirect search for charged-current charm production by neutrinos. Assuming a leading-order calculation of the inelasticity distribution for charm production events, zero charm production can be excluded at 91% confidence level in the energy range from 1.5 TeV to 340 TeV. In the future, it is expected that the techniques developed for this analysis can be applied to search for neutrino interactions beyond the Standard Model in IceCube and next-generation neutrino telescopes.

Numerous theories on how these masses are generated give rise to additional non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with quarks and charged leptons. Atmospheric neutrinos provide a sensitive probe for the neutrino flavor transitions resulting from the type of NSI investigated in this work. These comprise neutral current forward scattering of neutrinos of all flavors on first generation charged fermions in Earth matter. In order to maximize model independence, the NSI are parametrized using five effective coupling strengths. In the IceCube-DeepCore detector, atmospheric neutrinos are detected indirectly via Cherenkov photons produced within the Antarctic glacier. The range of angles under which neutrinos enter the detector translates into propagation baselines of O(1 - 10000 )km. The data sample used in the presented analysis includes 9.3 years of DeepCore data, covering a neutrino energy range of 5 to 100 GeV. Accuracy and performance of event property reconstruction from observed photons are a crucial factor for the analysis outcome. Therefore, this work includes a thorough study of the potential and shortcomings of likelihood based DeepCore event reconstruction algorithms. The presented analysis relies on comparing binned observed event counts to simulation that is generated at different hypotheses. These include the individually considered NSI parameters as well as 17 nuisance parameters. In order to find the hypothesis that best describes the observation, the optimum of a test statistic is determined using a customized minimization strategy. The final analysis setup yields sensitivities to four effective NSI couplings that are competitive compared with existing results.

Topics included Astronomical Evidence for Dark Matter, the Cosmic Microwave Background, Supersymmetry, Inflation and Dark Energy, Structure Formation, Hot and Cold Dark Matter, and Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays all of which were represented by experts in the field. It was very nice to see again many of our 'old' friends in Dark Matter here in South Africa. The organizers were very glad to see, in addition to world experts, the new generation here. Many young participants gave very nice professional talks during the conference. We are grateful to John Ellis for doing an incredible job preparing his excellent summary talk during the sessions. Some special interest and intensive discussions were naturally raised by the first announcement of terrestrial evidence for hot dark matter, obtained from neutrino less double beta decay. This now adds to the evidence for cold dark matter which we have from DAM A for several years already, and which remained unchallenged up to now by other experiments.

At some level, this extension will impact neutrino oscillation searches. In this work we explore the differences and similarities between the case in which these neutrinos are kinematically accessible (sterile neutrinos) or not (mixing matrix non-unitarity). We clarify apparent inconsistencies in the present literature when using different parametrizations to describe these effects and recast both limits in the popular neutrino non-standard interaction (NSI) formal- ism. We find that, in the limit in which sterile oscillations are averaged out at the near detector, their effects at the far detector coincide with non-unitarity at leading order, even in presence of a matter potential. We also summarize the present bounds existing in both limits and compare them with the expected sensitivities of near-future facilities taking the DUNE proposal as a bench- mark. We conclude that non-unitarity effects are too constrained to impact present or near future neutrino oscillation facilities but that sterile neutrinos can play an important role at long baseline experiments. The role of the near detector is also discussed in detail.

An example of an interaction which comes from R-parity violating Supersymmetry is discussed in detail in Chapter 1. Reviews of nuclear physics and the supernova model are also given in this chapter. The cross sections for neutrino flavor changing scattering in vacuum with nuclei and free nucleons are given in Chapter 1. Corrections which account for neutrinos scattering with nuclei in the core medium are given in Chapter 2. Uncertainties in the equation of state and composition of nuclear matter at high density, and the impact of these uncertainties on neutrino scattering cross sections are discussed in Chapter 2 as well. Analytical estimates of flavor changing scattering rates are calculated in Chapter 1 and a qualitative discussion of the effects on the model is then offered. Results from a one-zone core collapse numerical simulation are presented in Chapter 2. A detailed discussion of the code, and equations which describe the core are included in this chapter. Chapter 3 outlines how to include these interactions in a full simulation with neutrino transport and hydrodynamics.

Book excerpt: The standard theory describing neutrino oscillations only uses the interactions predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics. However, there is plenty of room for non-standard interactions (NSI) to exist. This is because extra interactions are allowed by experimental error bars and even expected at some level from effective theory arguments. My research has been in examining the phenomenological consequences of NSI at large atmospheric neutrino detectors like IceCube DeepCore. Of particular focus are the degeneracies between and within the standard neutrino oscillation parameters and the NSI parameters. These degeneracies will be explored both analytically and numerically, and strategies to lift them will also be discussed.
