Book Synopsis Macromolecules by : Hans-Georg Elias
Download or read book Macromolecules written by Hans-Georg Elias and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 2005-10-28 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Macromolecules" provides a broad survey of the entire subject; integrated representations of chemistry, physics, and technology; precise descriptions and definitions of basic phenomena; and balanced treatments of facts and theory. The book series thus intends to bridge the gap between introductory textbooks and the highly specialized texts and monographs that cover only part of polymer science and technology. Volume I is concerned with the fundamentals of chemical structure and principles of synthesis of macromolecules: constitution, configuration, conformation, polymerization equilibria, polymerization mechanisms (ionic, coordination, free-radical, step reactions, including solid-state and biochemical polymerizations), polymer reactions, and strategies for defined polymer architectures. Volume II discusses individual polymers and their industrial syntheses, Volume III the fundamentals of physical structures and properties, and Volume IV the processing and application of polymers as plastics, fibers, elastomers, thickeners, etc. The world of macromolecules in a nutshell.

Book Synopsis Organic Chemistry in Action by : F. Serratosa
Download or read book Organic Chemistry in Action written by F. Serratosa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to all other books in the field of organic synthesis, this volume combines Corey's methodology, which is based on the concept of synthon and retrosynthetic analysis, with Evans' methodology based on the `Lapworth model' of alternating polarities. Using this approach, the formation of carbon-carbon bonds and the manipulation of functional groups are treated together, whereas the stereochemical aspects are considered separately. Emphasis is laid on the importance of rigid structures, whether in the starting materials, the synthetic intermediates or the transition states, as a means of controlling the stereochemistry of the organic compounds. Enclosed with the book is a copy of a miniprogram (CHAOS) for an IBM PC, or fully compatible computers, which is an interactive program, affording the beginner a fast and easy way of learning, exploring and looking for new synthetic schemes of molecules of moderate complexity. As a textbook on organic synthesis, this volume will be of immense value at university level.
Book Synopsis Aspects of Organic Chemistry by : Gerhard Quinkert
Download or read book Aspects of Organic Chemistry written by Gerhard Quinkert and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1996 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling molecular structures is a useful tool for the description, classification and understanding of molecules – species, which have already been synthesized, and others existing only in the imagination of the chemist. The first part of the four–volume series ′Aspects of Organic Chemistry′ focuses on molecular structure, especially that of nucleid acids and proteins. The authors, a team of internationally recognized specialists, present a modern interdisciplinary concept between chemistry – and biology – an approach, which proved to be useful in university education. A unique book, important for both lecturers and students. Subjects of the three remaining volumes are ′Reactivity′, ′Synthesis′ and ′Methods of Structure Elucidation′.
Book Synopsis Organic Geochemistry by : Geoffrey Eglinton
Download or read book Organic Geochemistry written by Geoffrey Eglinton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, the subject matter encompassed by the title of this book was largely limited to those who were interested in the two most economically important organic materials found buried in the Earth, namely, coal and petroleum. The point of view of any discussions which might occur, either in scientific meetings or in books that have been written, was, therefore, dominated largely by these interests. A great change has occurred in the last decade. This change had as its prime mover our growing knowledge of the molecular architecture of biological systems which, in turn, gave rise to a more legitimate asking of the question: "How did life come to be on the surface of the Earth?" A second motivation arose when the possibilities for the exploration of planets other than the Earth-the moon, Mars, and other parts of the solar system-became a reality. Thus the question of the possible existence of life elsewhere than on Earth conceivably could be answered.

Book Synopsis Tools and Modes of Representation in the Laboratory Sciences by : U. Klein
Download or read book Tools and Modes of Representation in the Laboratory Sciences written by U. Klein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: constitutive of reference in laboratory sciences as cultural sign systems and their manipulation and superposition, collectively shared classifications and associated conceptual frameworks,· and various fonns of collective action and social institutions. This raises the question of how much modes of representation, and specific types of sign systems mobilized to construct them, contribute to reference. Semioticians have argued that sign systems are not merely passive media for expressing preconceived ideas but actively contribute to meaning. Sign systems are culturally loaded with meaning stemming from previous practical applications and social traditions of applications. In new local contexts of application they not only transfer stabilized meaning but also can be used as active resources to add new significance and modify previous meaning. This view is supported by several analyses presented in this volume. Sign systems can be implemented like tools that are manipulated and superposed with other types of signs to forge new representations. The mode of representation, made possible by applying and manipulating specific types of representational tools, such as diagrammatic rather than mathematical representations, or Berzelian fonnulas rather than verbal language, contributes to meaning and forges fine-grained differentiations between scientists' concepts. Taken together, the essays contained in this volume give us a multifaceted picture of the broad variety of modes of representation in nineteenth-century and twentieth-century laboratory sciences, of the way scientists juxtaposed and integrated various representations, and of their pragmatic use as tools in scientific and industrial practice.
