Download or read book African Americans in Minnesota written by David Vassar Taylor and published by Minnesota Historical Society Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While making up a smaller percentage of Minnesota's population compared to national averages, African Americans have had a profound influence on the history and culture of the state from its earliest days to the present. Author David Taylor chronicles the rich history of Blacks in the state through careful analysis of census and housing records, newspaper records, and first-person accounts. He recounts the triumphs and struggles of African Americans in Minnesota over the past 200 years in a clear and concise narrative. Major themes covered include settlement by Blacks during the territorial and early statehood periods; the development of urban Black communities in St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Duluth; Blacks in rural areas; the emergence of Black community organizations and leaders in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries; and Black communities in transition during the turbulent last half of the twentieth century. Taylor also introduces influential and notable African Americans: George Bonga, the first African American born in the region during the fur trade era; Harriet and Dred Scott, whose two-year residence at Fort Snelling in the 1830s later led to a famous, though unsuccessful, legal challenge to the institution of slavery; John Quincy Adams, publisher of the state's first Black newspaper; Fredrick L. McGhee, the state's first Black lawyer; community leaders, politicians, and civil servants including James Griffin, Sharon Sayles Belton, Alan Page, Jean Harris, and Dr. Richard Green; and nationally influential artists including August Wilson, Lou Bellamy, Prince, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis. African Americans in Minnesota is the fourth book in The People of Minnesota, a series dedicated to telling the history of the state through the stories of its ethnic groups in accessible and illustrated paperbacks.

Book excerpt: “There was this girl who went to Sun City, bright as sunshine, graceful and witty.” That was the first line of the Author’s poem on Aishwarya Rai, Miss World 1994 that won him the first prize in a Times Of India Contest. This was soon followed by two more poems that were published in the Times of India, one on the match-fixing controversy and the other about Diana’s ‘death in a car crash’ These three convinced the writer that he is comfortable with writing topical poetry. That’s how the idea of writing a ‘book of poems’ about the epoch-making 20th century was born, later to be nurtured and finally to fructify in the form of this book, ‘A Century and a Score’. The book is about the happenings and people of the 20th century and 20 years thereafter. It ‘races through in an easy-going, rhyming style and concisely packs information, interspersed with wit and satire. Happy reading folks!! Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ... EDUCATION FOR MANHOOD The well known and well worn maxim of the poet, Lowell: "New occasions teach new duties, Time makes ancient good uncouth," expressed, with practical shrewdness, a transient phase, rather than the permanent form of truth. Good in the positive, or even in the comparative, degree may, indeed, be limited by circumstances, time and place; but superlative good is of the nature and essence of things eternal. A shallow philosophy emphasizes the evanescent phase of things rather than their permanent and enduring quality. To the superficial observer the world would seem to be one continuous panorama of evanescent issues. Practical wisdom would seem to be the only effective wisdom. Opportuneness seems to be the controlling virtue. The man who is wise in his day and generation must catch the manners living as they rise, or they will forever elude his grasp. The wisdom of one age becomes the folly of the next. The schoolboy of to-day laughs at the erudition of the ancient sage. The theories which passed as marvels of knowledge a generation ago are now regarded as curious survivals of the intellectual dark ages. Celebrated works on science, philosophy and social polity which once held the world under the dominion of their dogma are now relegated to the moth and dust of oblivion. The path of progress is strewn with the derelict of discarded and discredited theories. The science of yesterday, to-day, is science but falsely socalled. "We call our fathers fools, so wise we grow, Our wiser sons, no doubt, will call us so." But a deeper philosophy gives a more comprehensive and far reaching vision. Essential truth transcends the mutation of time and the vicissitude of condition, and perdures from everlasting to everlasting. The waves...
