Certaines de ces constantes se révèlent après coup être calculables, c’est-à-dire exprimables par une relation mathématique quand d’autres ne sont que mesurables de façon empirique. Cette dernière catégorie est qualifiée de constantes fondamentales. Si l’on tente de faire disparaître ces constantes fondamentales, par exemple en modifiant le système d’unités de mesure, on les voit réapparaître sous une autre forme dans d’autres relations mathématiques ; elles semblent donc nécessaires, ce qui a convaincu les physiciens de leur nature fondamentale. Mais que sont ces constantes ? Sont-elles toutes fondamentales ? Quelle est leur nature ? Sont-elles l’aspect « émergé » de lois physiques encore plus fondamentales ou de certains aspects inconnus de la nature ? Pourquoi ont-elles été choisies comme fondement des unités de mesure du système international ? Sont-elles indépendantes les unes des autres ? Quels liens établissent-elles entre les différentes théories constituant le corpus de la physique moderne ? Ce sont ces questions et quelques autres qui sont abordées dans cet essai qui se situe entre physique et philosophie des sciences.
