Book Synopsis The Chief Constables of England and Wales by : David S. Wall
Download or read book The Chief Constables of England and Wales written by David S. Wall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this book analytically examines the social and professional origins of one of the most powerful groups in society, the Chief Constables of the police forces of England and Wales. By examining the selection policies of police authorities during the past century and a half, it provides an explanation of the contrast that is found between the picture of yesterday’s Chief Constable as an ex-military, tweed suit wearing, friend of the local aristocracy and the technocratic managerial image of Chief Constables today. Drawing upon analysis of the careers of fall Chief Constables known to have held office between 1835 and 1995, and supplemented by contemporary and recent literature, this book illustrates the subtle interaction that was found between politics and policing at both local and national levels. At the centre of these findings is the observation that whilst they were once part of their respective local power elites, Chief Constables are now an elite group in their own right with direct links with central government.

Inspector Alleyn’s wife, the artist Agatha Troy, has a special fondness for Constables—the paintings, that is, not the policemen. So she jumps at the chance to take a river cruise through “Constable Country” in the east of England, in honor of the nineteenth-century master of landscapes. Her enthusiasm dims a little, though, when it becomes clear that the ticket became available at the last minute only because a previous passenger was murdered in his cabin . . . “It’s time to start comparing Christie to Marsh instead of the other way around.” —New York Magazine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the recent outcrop of controversy about the police and their accountability in the 1960s, there was no work dealing in detail with the problems discussed in this book. Originally published in 1965, it examines an unresolved issue, namely the position of the police in the constitutional framework and the extent to which police activities are subject to control by the electorate and their representatives in local authorities and in Parliament. The book attacks the well-known doctrine and the ‘independence’ of the police which had been widely accepted at the time. Topics dealt with include the legal status of constables and chief constables; pre- and post-war controversies about accountability for police operations; relations between local police authorities and the Home Secretary; the Royal Commission of 1962; the new Judges’ Rules for police questioning; and the Police Act, 1964. This work is an informed analysis of the problems being discussed at the time about police powers and activities. Relevant to courses in Government, Local Government and Constitutional Law, today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

Download or read book Ritual and Conflict: The Social Relations of Childbirth in Early Modern England written by Adrian Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book places childbirth in early-modern England within a wider network of social institutions and relationships. Starting with illegitimacy - the violation of the marital norm - it proceeds through marriage to the wider gender-order and so to the ’ceremony of childbirth’, the popular ritual through which women collectively controlled this, the pivotal event in their lives. Focussing on the seventeenth century, but ranging from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, this study offers a new viewpoint on such themes as the patriarchal family, the significance of illegitimacy, and the structuring of gender-relations in the period.
