Download or read book Rural Education and the Consolidated School (Classic Reprint) written by Julius Bernhard Arp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Education and the Consolidated School The author is convinced that the time has come when we must insist upon a full program of reconstruction from the ground up, and begin to build at once. The gist of the problem is to establish a new school in which the essentials of a modern education can be taught. The old school, as still found in over ninety per cent of the rural districts, does not lend itself to such a program; and no amount of repair, addition, varnish, or veneer will transform it into an efficient, modern institution. Rebuilding is absolutely essential. Some friends of the rural school advocate comprehensive changes in the curriculum and justly demand that the training of country boys and girls shall culminate in a complete industrial and vocational education, adapted to twentieth-century life. They are agreed that rural teachers must measure up professionally and otherwise to their colleagues in our best school systems; they recognize that salaries paid must be adequate to insure high-class training and instruction; and yet they fail to see that these things are impossible in an obsolete school system in which the first elements of success are wanting. Book Synopsis Making the Grade by : William A. Fischel
Download or read book Making the Grade written by William A. Fischel and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-11-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant factor for many people deciding where to live is the quality of the local school district, with superior schools creating a price premium for housing. The result is a “race to the top,” as all school districts attempt to improve their performance in order to attract homebuyers. Given the importance of school districts to the daily lives of children and families, it is surprising that their evolution has not received much attention. In this provocative book, William Fischel argues that the historical development of school districts reflects Americans’ desire to make their communities attractive to outsiders. The result has been a standardized, interchangeable system of education not overly demanding for either students or teachers, one that involved parents and local voters in its governance and finance. Innovative in its focus on bottom-up processes generated by individual behaviors rather than top-down decisions by bureaucrats, Making the Grade provides a new perspective on education reform that emphasizes how public schools form the basis for the localized social capital in American towns and cities.

Book Synopsis Rebuilding the Rural Southern Community by : Mary S. Hoffschwelle
Download or read book Rebuilding the Rural Southern Community written by Mary S. Hoffschwelle and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Mary Hoffschwelle shines a much-needed light on the efforts of rural reformers. She focuses on Tennessee because its varied geography and the large number of rural reform programs it hosted make it a particularly rich subject for study. Also, the state typified the burdens of poverty and racial division that characterized the South as a whole, and, as the author shows, such problems attracted considerable attention from reformers.
