Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environmental movement of the 1960s made educationists in some parts of the world aware of the significance and importance of ecology in curricula at all levels of education, from kindergarten to post-secondary. A great deal of progress was made in the early 1970s in incorporating environmental awareness programs into educa tional systems go that what was once considered a fad was gradually becoming a part of formal education in a number of institutions, especially in Canada and the U.S.A. It was therefore appropriate that an international scientific body devote some time to the issue of ecology in education. Early in 1976, I suggested to the International Association for Ecology (Inteco1) that a symposium on Environmental Education be included in the program of the Second International Congress of Ecology scheduled to be held in Jerusalem in September 1978. In the first draft program of the Congress, the topic was included as a poster session. I considered this inadequate and appealed to the Congress Steering Committee to focus greater attention on environ mental education. The first draft program contained phrases like "utilization of resources", "conservation problems", "environmental moni toring", and "irreversible changes". These phrases more or less assumed that people in general understood ecological principles. Literature on environmental education seems to suggest that a wide gap separated most of the professional ecologists from a large portion of mankind primarily because we the ecologists have paid scant attention to the ecological education of world's citizens.

Book Synopsis Ecology and Ecosystem Conservation by : Oswald J. Schmitz
Download or read book Ecology and Ecosystem Conservation written by Oswald J. Schmitz and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meeting today’s environmental challenges requires a new way of thinking about the intricate dependencies between humans and nature. Ecology and Ecosystem Conservation provides students and other readers with a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of ecological science and their applications, offering an essential overview of the way ecology can be used to devise strategies to conserve the health and functioning of ecosystems. The book begins by exploring the need for ecological science in understanding current environmental issues and briefly discussing what ecology is and isn’t. Subsequent chapters address critical issues in conservation and show how ecological science can be applied to them. The book explores questions such as: • What is the role of ecological science in decision making? • What factors govern the assembly of ecosystems and determine their response to various stressors? • How does Earth’s climate system function and determine the distribution of life on Earth? • What factors control the size of populations? • How does fragmentation of the landscape affect the persistence of species on the landscape? • How does biological diversity influence ecosystem processes? The book closes with a final chapter that addresses the need not only to understand ecological science, but to put that science into an ecosystem conservation ethics perspective.

Book Synopsis Environmental Education and Advocacy by : Edward A. Johnson
Download or read book Environmental Education and Advocacy written by Edward A. Johnson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-03-03 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental education has often blurred the distinction between ecological science and environmental advocacy. Growing public awareness of environmental problems and desire for action may be contributing to this blurring. There is a need to clarify the distinction between the role of ecological science and the role of social and political values for the environment within environmental education. This book addresses this need by examining the changing perspectives of ecology in education and the changing perspectives of education in environmental education. Guidelines are provided for assessing the science and education perspectives within environmental education, along with suggested frameworks for development of programs and resources that integrate current science, education and action. This book will be of interest to environmental educators, ecologists interested in environmental education, and curriculum and resource developers.

Book Synopsis New Ideas in Environmental Education by : Sálvano Briceño
Download or read book New Ideas in Environmental Education written by Sálvano Briceño and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, this book was a plea for new approaches to environmental education. In the years prior to publication there had been a reappraisal of education and a growing awareness of the problems of environment and development. However, the movements had rarely met. The objective of this book was to present some of the ideas and the action that was taking place at the time. It was put forward for discussion because a major intergovernmental meeting took place in 1987, ten years on from the famous Tbilisi meeting, the world's first intergovernmental conference on environmental education. With environmental education still very much on the world’s agenda today, this title can be used as a resource to show where it all began.
Book Synopsis Ecology, Environmental Science & Conservation by : Singh J.S., Singh S.P. & Gupta S.R.
Download or read book Ecology, Environmental Science & Conservation written by Singh J.S., Singh S.P. & Gupta S.R. and published by S. Chand Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years, the scope of our scientific understanding and technical skills in ecology and environmental science have widened significantly, with increasingly greater emphasis on societal issues. In this book, an attempt has been made to give basic concepts of ecology, environmental science and various aspects of natural resource conservation. The topics covered primarily deal with environmental factors affecting organisms, adaptations, biogeography, ecology of species populations and species interactions, biotic communities and ecosystems, environmental pollution, stresses caused by toxics, global environmental change, exotic species invasion, conservation of biodiversity, ecological restoration, impact assessment, application of remote sensing and geographical information system for analysis and management of natural resources, and approaches of ecological economics. The main issues have been discussed within the framework of sustainability, considering humans as part of ecosystems, and recognising that sustainable development requires integration of ecology with social sciences for policy formulation and implementation.
