Book Synopsis Plant Response to Global Change by : Erika Ann Sudderth
Download or read book Plant Response to Global Change written by Erika Ann Sudderth and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in global environmental conditions, including the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide, temperature, and soil nutrients, will have varying effects on the performance of plant species and insect herbivores. Atmospheric CO 2 concentrations and nitrogen availability are both critical environmental variables controlling the growth and chemistry of plant species. The plant-mediated responses of phloem feeding aphids and leaf chewing insects to changes in these environmental conditions were examined in a series of experiments. Phloem feeding aphids and leaf chewing insects were used to study the feeding preferences and long-term performance of the insect species when feeding on plants grown under different conditions. Global change conditions affected both plant and insect herbivores, however the interactions between different environmental factors that sometimes affected plant traits did not affect insect herbivores. Plant species identity had the largest effect on insect herbivore performance, while global change factors had the largest effects on herbivores feeding on less preferred plant species.

Book Synopsis Invasive Species in Forests and Rangelands of the United States by : Therese M. Poland
Download or read book Invasive Species in Forests and Rangelands of the United States written by Therese M. Poland and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book describes the serious threat of invasive species to native ecosystems. Invasive species have caused and will continue to cause enormous ecological and economic damage with ever increasing world trade. This multi-disciplinary book, written by over 100 national experts, presents the latest research on a wide range of natural science and social science fields that explore the ecology, impacts, and practical tools for management of invasive species. It covers species of all taxonomic groups from insects and pathogens, to plants, vertebrates, and aquatic organisms that impact a diversity of habitats in forests, rangelands and grasslands of the United States. It is well-illustrated, provides summaries of the most important invasive species and issues impacting all regions of the country, and includes a comprehensive primary reference list for each topic. This scientific synthesis provides the cultural, economic, scientific and social context for addressing environmental challenges posed by invasive species and will be a valuable resource for scholars, policy makers, natural resource managers and practitioners.
Download or read book Insect Ecology written by Peter W. Price and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 829 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining breadth of coverage with detail, this logical and cohesive introduction to insect ecology couples concepts with a broad range of examples and practical applications. It explores cutting-edge topics in the field, drawing on and highlighting the links between theory and the latest empirical studies. The sections are structured around a series of key topics, including behavioral ecology; species interactions; population ecology; food webs, communities and ecosystems; and broad patterns in nature. Chapters progress logically from the small scale to the large; from individual species through to species interactions, populations and communities. Application sections at the end of each chapter outline the practicality of ecological concepts and show how ecological information and concepts can be useful in agriculture, horticulture and forestry. Each chapter ends with a summary, providing a brief recap, followed by a set of questions and discussion topics designed to encourage independent and creative thinking.

Book Synopsis Recent Advances in Polyphenol Research, Volume 7 by : Jess Reed
Download or read book Recent Advances in Polyphenol Research, Volume 7 written by Jess Reed and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RECENT ADVANCES IN POLYPHENOL RESEARCH Plant polyphenols are secondary metabolites that constitute one of the most common and widespread groups of natural products. They are essential plant components for adaptation to the environment and possess a large and diverse range of biological functions that provide many benefits to both plants and humans. Polyphenols, from their structurally simplest forms to their oligo/polymeric versions (i.e. tannin and lignin), are phytoestrogens, plant pigments, antioxidants, and structural components of the plant cell wall. The interaction between tannins and proteins is involved in plant defense against predation, cause astringency in foods and beverages, and affect the nutritional and health properties of human and animal food plants. This seventh volume of the highly regarded Recent Advances in Polyphenol Research series is edited by Jess Dreher Reed, Victor Armando Pereira de Freitas, and Stéphane Quideau, and brings together chapters written by some of the leading experts working in the polyphenol sciences today. Topics covered include: Chemistry and physicochemistry Biosynthesis, genetics and metabolic engineering Roles in plants and ecosystems Food, nutrition and health Applied polyphenols Distilling the most recent and illuminating data available, this new volume is an invaluable resource for chemists, biochemists, plant scientists, pharmacognosists and pharmacologists, biologists, ecologists, food scientists and nutritionists.
