Book excerpt: The fitness program for those who don't want to aggravate old injuries-or risk new ones. For many, General Fitness is a perfectly acceptable goal. The benefits are numerous and established, and regular exercise is something you can do on your own behalf. But the hard-core images can get in the way. Bodybuilding, the combative sports, and extreme exercise can all produce impressive bodies, but impressive injuries as well. If staying injury-free is a major priority for you, these may not be the best influence on your workouts.Joint-Friendly Fitness is an approach to exercise that puts using your body safely first, above all other aspects of your program. It draws on anatomy, biomechanics, and physiology to determine how the muscles and joints work properly, and then applies that to exercise instructions. The goal is to get more fit, toned, and flexible while managing the risk of your workout itself causing an injury.Joint-Friendly Fitness is designed to avoid both the obvious injuries that happen during your workout, and the not-as-obvious wear and tear that leads to new injuries and chronic conditions. And what makes it The Optimal Exercise Program is that you can achieve the level of general fitness you desire, from looking better in clothes and moving without achy joints, to supporting your golf game or your 5ks, in the time and effort you have to devote to it.In this profusely illustrated manual, you will learn: How to use free weights, machines, cardio, and other exercises in a way that is more effective for conditioning yet easier on the joints. How your joints and muscles work most effectively, what their vulnerable positions are, and how to protect them during exercise. And how to organize your program for sustainable training with the intent of staying injury free. Strengthen your muscles, protect your joints, avoid injury...and benefit from exercise over a lifetime.

Book excerpt: This text is a high-level introduction to the modern theory of dynamical systems; an analysis-based, pure mathematics course textbook in the basic tools, techniques, theory and development of both the abstract and the practical notions of mathematical modelling, using both discrete and continuous concepts and examples comprising what may be called the modern theory of dynamics. Prerequisite knowledge is restricted to calculus, linear algebra and basic differential equations, and all higher-level analysis, geometry and algebra is introduced as needed within the text. Following this text from start to finish will provide the careful reader with the tools, vocabulary and conceptual foundation necessary to continue in further self-study and begin to explore current areas of active research in dynamical systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book for mathematics and mathematics education majors helps students gain an appreciation of geometry and its importance in the history and development of mathematics. The material is presented in three parts. The first is devoted to a rigorous introduction of Euclidean geometry, the second covers various noneuclidean geometries, and the last part delves into symmetry and polyhedra. Historical contexts accompany each topic. Exercises and activities are interwoven with the text to enable the students to explore geometry. Some of the activities take advantage of geometric software so students - in particular, future teachers - gain a better understanding of its capabilities. Others explore the construction of simple models or use manipulatives allowing students to experience the hands-on, creative side of mathematics. While this text contains a rigorous mathematical presentation, key design features and activities allow it to be used successfully in mathematics for teachers courses as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present text, we present a brief introduction to non-Euclidean geometries. We begin by presenting the foundations of classical geometry, and the discussion that gave rise to other geometries. There is an incredibly old example of an attempt to demonstrate the fifth postulate of Euclid due to Proclus, and part of Sacheri's work is retaken, to continue later with the achievements of Lobachevsky. In simple terms, the geometry to which we are accustomed, which is what we are taught from the basic studies, is the so-called classical geometry, which follows certain ideas that are taken as true facts and from there builds the veracity of other facts. In particular, the fifth postulate establishes the existence of lines that are called parallel, which are those that are never intercepted. Geometry arose from the need to understand the world around us, and from there arose the axioms of Euclidean geometry, but they were not entirely accurate. For example, in art we see that parallel lines are sometimes represented as intercepting lines on the horizon, at the so-called vanishing point. Apart from the non-Euclidean geometries we see other examples of geometry, the so-called friezes and mosaics. We conclude the book with a brief notion of topology and algebraic geometry.

This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a compendium style account of a comprehensive mathematical journey from Arithmetic to Algebra. It contains material that is helpful to graduate and advanced undergraduate students in mathematics, university and college professors teaching mathematics, as well as some mathematics teachers teaching in the final year of high school. A successful teacher must know more than what a particular course curriculum asks for. A number of topics that are missing in present-day textbooks, and which may be attractive to students at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level in mathematics, for example, continued fractions, arithmetic progressions of higher order, complex numbers in plane geometry, differential schemes, path semigroups and path algebras, have been carefully presented. This reflects the aim of the book to attract students to mathematics.
