The Advanced Summer Institute (ASI) was organized in the framework of the European FP5 funded project “ADEPT – Advanced computer aided Design of Ecological Products and Technologies integrating green energy sources” and was devoted to the Product Engineering field, with particular attention to the aspects related to the environmentally conscious design and green energy sources. The objective of the ASI was to create the framework for meeting of leading scientists with PhD holders and advanced PhD students carrying out research in the field of Eco-Design, CAD, Simulation technologies, Robotics, Manufacturing and green energy sources. The aim was to create conditions for high level training through a series of 15 invited lectures presented by world reputed scientists, as well as to give possibilities for young researchers to present their achievements and to establish professional contacts. The ASI was seen also as an opportunity for academics, practitioners and consultants from Europe and elsewhere who are involved in the study, management, development and implementation of product engineering principles in the learning and teaching sectors, as well as professionals to come together and share ideas on projects and examples of best practice.

It has been studied across a wide range of disciplines, from the natural sciences to philosophy and logic. Today, thirty plus years since Prior's work in laying out foundations for temporal logic, and two decades on from Pnueli's seminal work applying of temporal logic in specification and verification of computer programs, temporal logic has a strong and thriving international research community within the broad disciplines of computer science and artificial intelligence. Areas of activity include, but are certainly not restricted to: Pure Temporal Logic, e. g. temporal systems, proof theory, model theory, expressiveness and complexity issues, algebraic properties, application of game theory; Specification and Verification, e. g. of reactive systems, ofreal-time components, of user interaction, of hardware systems, techniques and tools for verification, execution and prototyping methods; Temporal Databases, e. g. temporal representation, temporal query ing, granularity of time, update mechanisms, active temporal data bases, hypothetical reasoning; Temporal Aspects in AI, e. g. modelling temporal phenomena, in terval temporal calculi, temporal nonmonotonicity, interaction of temporal reasoning with action/knowledge/belief logics, temporal planning; Tense and Aspect in Natural Language, e. g. models, ontologies, temporal quantifiers, connectives, prepositions, processing tempo ral statements; Temporal Theorem Proving, e. g. translation methods, clausal and non-clausal resolution, tableaux, automata-theoretic approaches, tools and practical systems.

Book excerpt: Generally, scheduling problems accompanying typical batch processes are vitally important to be solved for improving the plant productivity. In these respects, finding a good and feasible schedule or even an optimal result, by which costs and lead times can be reduced, is often a very complex and also a difficult task. Moreover, in large plants, the challenges come not only from the modeling ways that require systematic and structured approaches, but also from the exact strategies how the performance of the model can be analyzed. The goal of this research is to develop a comprehensive study on industrial-sized plants, with regard modeling and analysis of scheduling problems. Formalization of the required plant specifications, the modularly modeling ways which refer to the widely used batch standards, and also the strategies for tackling complexity, are the main contributions of this thesis. These studies will be carried out by using the Timed Net Condition/Event Systems (TNCES) model. Finally, the model is analyzed to synthesize an optimal control strategy for the investigated plants.

Book excerpt: This book presents a statistical parametric speech synthesis (SPSS) framework for developing a speech synthesis system where the desired speech is generated from the parameters of vocal tract and excitation source. Throughout the book, the authors discuss novel source modeling techniques to enhance the naturalness and overall intelligibility of the SPSS system. This book provides several important methods and models for generating the excitation source parameters for enhancing the overall quality of synthesized speech. The contents of the book are useful for both researchers and system developers. For researchers, the book is useful for knowing the current state-of-the-art excitation source models for SPSS and further refining the source models to incorporate the realistic semantics present in the text. For system developers, the book is useful to integrate the sophisticated excitation source models mentioned to the latest models of mobile/smart phones.

When people talk, they use not only their voices, but also facial expressions and other gestures, and perhaps even touch. When computers communicate with people, they use pictures and perhaps sounds, together with textual language, and when people communicate with computers, they are likely to use mouse gestures almost as much as words. How are such multimodal dialogues constructed? This is the main question addressed in this selection of papers of the second Venaco Workshop, sponsored by the NATO Research Study Group RSG-10 on Automatic Speech Processing, and by the European Speech Communication Association (ESCA).

Book excerpt: This book discusses the technological developments achieved by distinguished figures in the history of mechanism and machine science (MMS). This is the fifth volume of a series of books which gathered contributions on the leading scientists in the field. This book focuses specifically on the IFToMM community and its activities over the last 50 years, showcases who-is-who in MMS, and emphasizes—together with the previous books of the series—the significance of MMS through time. Each chapter recognizes persons whose scientific work resulted in relevant technical developments in the historical evolution of MMS within IFToMM. Biographical notes describing the efforts and achievements of these persons are included as well, but a technical survey is the core of each chapter, offering a modern interpretation of their legacy.
