Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facilitate honest, thoughtful and respectful consideration of controversial questions An exciting first edition, Congenial Debates on Controversial Questions is designed to promote careful and vigorous yet congenial and respectful examination of a wide range of controversial ethical issues. It is unique in focusing attention on two steps that are essential prior to productive consideration of controversial questions: First, the elimination of Straw Man distortions that cause students to not only talk past one another but also to have a very negative view of those with whom they disagree; and second, the importance of understanding that those on the opposing side have legitimate and important concerns that can be understood and appreciated even by those who strongly disagree with their position. With those problems cleared away, students can approach these difficult questions with openness to the best arguments on both sides: not with the goal of "meeting in the middle," but of honestly appreciating the actual issues and the complexities of those issues. Congenial Debates on Controversial Questions is organized around 15 major current issues, including the most vigorously debated contemporary social issues, such as abortion, capital punishment, drug legalization, immigration, same-sex marriage, church/state relations, the social responsibilities of corporations, and animal rights. Learning Goals Upon completing this book, readers will be able to: Recognize the misinformation and Straw Man arguments in daily conversations. Explore new perspectives on examining difficult issues. Gain an honest appreciation of the best points of differing views. NOTE: MySearchLab does not come automatically packaged with this text. Book Synopsis Contextual Subjects by : Robert Leckey
Download or read book Contextual Subjects written by Robert Leckey and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-02-16 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law and legal discourse both presuppose and produce legal subjects. Views on the nature of the legal subject will constantly shift, therefore, with changes in the law. Contextual Subjects argues that a new view of the legal subject has indeed emerged and that it is now embedded in the social context and relationships. This claim is developed through a contrast of Canadian family law and administrative law as it was in the mid-twentieth century and as it is today. Robert Leckey argues that it is not only the subject that is contextual. Legal discourse and adjudication have also become more contextual, making family law and administrative law themselves contextual subjects. Leckey bolsters this argument through the use of relational theory, a rich strand of feminist political theory that advocates a contextual method and seeks to promote constructive relationships that enable relational autonomy. Developments in family law and administrative law, therefore, exemplify the contextualism called for by relational theorists. Leckey points to the importance of contextualization, but he is not uncritical of relational theory, insisting that it should articulate more forcefully its normative vision of good relationships and offer clear recommendations in contested areas. Contextual Subjects is the most thorough and sustained application of relational theory to legal examples to appear to date. It is unique in Canadian legal scholarship for the way it pairs family law and administrative law, and within legal scholarship in English for its integration of common law and civil law.

Amber Day focuses on the parodist news show, the satiric documentary, and ironic activism to examine the techniques of performance across media, highlighting their shared objective of bypassing standard media outlets and the highly choreographed nature of current political debate.

Book Synopsis Reconsidering Social Constructionism by : Gale Miller
Download or read book Reconsidering Social Constructionism written by Gale Miller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the impact of social interactionist and ethnographic methodology twenty-five years ago, the research agenda in social problems began to shift its focus, giving rise to the Social Constructionism movement. The present volume and the related shorter text, Constructionist Controversies, review the substantial contributions made by social constructionist theorists over that period, as well as recent debates about the future of the perspective. These contributions redefine the purpose and central questions of social problems theory and articulate a research program for analyzing social problems as social constructions. A generation of theorists has been trained in the constructionist perspective and has extended it through numerous analyses of diverse aspects of contemporary social life. The debates in this volume pose fundamental questions about the major assumptions of the perspective, the ways in which it is practiced, and the purposes of social problems theory. Their point of departure is Ibarra and Kitsuse's essay, cutting new theoretical ground in calling for ""investigating vernacular resources, especially rhetorical forms, in the social problems process.""Contributors are forceful proponents both within and outside of the social constructionist community, who take a broad array of positions on the current state of social problems theory and on the rhetorical forms that need exploring. They also lay down the general lines for diverse and often competing programs for the future development of the constructionist agenda.

Book excerpt: To Redeem the Soul of America looks beyond the towering figure of Martin Luther King, Jr., to disclose the full workings of the organization that supported him. As Adam Fairclough reveals the dynamics within the Southern Christian Leadership Conference he shows how Julian Bond, Jesse Jackson, Wyatt Walker, Andrew Young, and others also played a hand in the triumphs of Selma and Birmingham and the frustrations of Albany and Chicago. Joining a charismatic leader with an inspired group of activists, the SCLC built a bridge from the black proletariat to the white liberal elite and then, finally, to the halls of Congress and the White House.

Book excerpt: "Charles James Fox PC (24 January 1749 ? 13 September 1806), styled The Honourable from 1762, was a prominent British Whig statesman whose parliamentary career spanned thirty-eight years of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and who was particularly noted for being the arch-rival of William Pitt the Younger. His father was a leading Whig and Fox rose to prominence in the House of Commons as a forceful and eloquent speaker with a notorious and colourful private life, though his opinions were rather conservative and conventional. However, with the coming of the American War of Independence and the influence of the Whig Edmund Burke, Fox's opinions evolved into some of the most radical ever to be aired in the Parliament of his era."--Wikipedia.
