Book excerpt: High fidelity measurements of time-dependent strain in the plastic-bonded explosives LX-17-1 and PBX 9502 have been performed under constant, uni-axial, compressive load using a custom designed apparatus. The apparatus uses a combination of extensometers and linear variable differential transformers coupled with a data acquisition system, thermal controls, and gravitational loading. The materials being tested consist of a crystalline explosive material mixed with a polymeric binder. The behavior of each material is related to the type of explosive and to the percentage and type of binder. For any given plastic-bonded explosive, the creep behavior is also dependent on the stress level and test temperature. Experiments were conducted using a 3 x 3 stress-temperature matrix with a temperature range of 24 C to 70 C and with stresses ranging from 250-psi to 780-psi. Analysis of the data has shown that logarithmic curve fits provide an accurate means of quantification and facilitate a long-term predictive capability. This paper will discuss the design of the apparatus, experimental results, and analyses.

Book excerpt: The mechanical properties of composite explosives are being studied as a function of mechanical confinement and three techniques for confinement were used. These are: (a) a constant confining pressure obtained by oil immersion, (b) radial confinement of a cylindrical sample by a thick walled steel cylinder that surrounds the sample (negligible radial strain), and (c) radial confinement of thin wafers by the platen-sample friction. while many energetic materials fail by crack growth when unconfined (significant surface area free of stress), with all of these forms of confinement, they appear to fail by yield and plastic flow. For crystalline explosives (e.g., TNT and Composition B), the yield strength and the modulus are independent of confining pressure so that useful results can be easily obtained by use of the steel cylinder technique. However, for materials containing polymer binders, such as plastic bonded explosives, a constant confining pressure is used because these properties are found to significantly increase with this pressure. These results indicate the very significant role of the polymer binders in determining the mechanical properties of these energetic materials.

The tests conducted offer only limited statistical assurance of exlosive insensitivity due to the small number of samples evaluated. Book excerpt: The indirect tension test was evaluated to determine its feasibility for measurements of the mechanical properties of plastic bonded explosives (PBX) samples from coupon compatibility tests and small scale tests used to evaluate new binders for explosives. Tests were run on LX-09, LX-04, LX-14 and RX-03-BB to determine if the dynamic range of the test would be adequate for these materials. The maximum stress ranged from 623 to 4182 kPa for these materials. The effect of test temperature on LX-09 and RX-03-BB was investigated to determine the temperature control required for the test. Tests were conducted to determine if both isostatically and mechanically pressed PBX parts could be used with this test. The data from these series of tests indicate that the indirect tension test will provide useful information about the mechanical strength of PBX's.

Book excerpt: The initial part of the uniaxial stress versus strain response in compression can be described in terms of an undamaged modulus, Eo, a peak stress, sigma(m) (a failure stress), and a strain at the peak stress, epsilon(m) (a failure strain). Sigma(m) increases in proportion to Eo and epsilon(m) is approximately constant with changes in temperature and strain rate for all of the composites considered. In addition, sigma(m) increases in proportion to Eo(exp 1/2) and epsilon(m) is proportional to 1/Eo(exp 1/2) for larger values of Eo for some of the composites. Brittle fracture is often, but not always, observed for the larger values of Eo. These results suggest two separate failure modes, and possible mechanisms for each mode are discussed.
