Book excerpt: Amongst the contemporary gap waveguide structures, both ridge gap waveguide (RGW) and groove gap waveguide (GGWG) display low losses and are resistant to signal leakage without the requirement of electrical contacts. In both scenarios, the concept is to allow the wave propagation through the guiding part and eliminating signal leakage in all other directions. Since, at present, millimeter-wave (mm-wave) has gained attention due to its versatile usability at high-frequency applications, it is quite obligatory to develop components with superior electrical features, like high stability, wider bandwidth, as well as high power handling capability at that frequency range. Considering the stated advantages, the proposed devices in this research work emphases on the mm-wave application that are mainly accountable for connecting standard waveguides and feeding antenna systems. The research work can be summarized in three segments. The first segment aims at designing waveguide adaptors based on the gap waveguide technology that do not necessarily require perfect electrical contact. The contact-free adaptor has been designed for both standard rectangular and circular waveguides covering multiple mm-wave frequency bands within 50- 110 GHz. Additionally, while designing the adaptor, surface roughness has been considered to achieve the response of the structure close enough to the practical case. The same adapter can also be used with different standard waveguide dimensions operating within 50-110 GHz by changing the adapter's waveguide parameters. The proposed contact-free adaptor exhibits an excellent return loss and insertion loss of better than 20 dB and 0.3 dB, respectively, for both standard circular and rectangular waveguides, regardless of a smooth or uneven surface. The second segment focuses on a contact-free flangeless pipe connection for both circular and rectangular standard waveguides, covering multiple frequency bands amid 50 and 110 GHz. The contactless, low-loss, flange-free, and pluggable contact aims at joining two slightly modified standard waveguides, along with a 60% downscaling of the recommended structure compared to the traditional UG-387/U waveguide flange, hence demonstrating a reflection coefficient better than -20 dB in each scenario. In addition, the third segment is introducing microwave devices that can combine and separate two propagating polarizations, such as orthomode transducers (OMT). Aiming for high power applications with compact structure, the proposed configuration introduces a new design procedure of combining the ridge gap and groove gap waveguides for the OMTs, validating an acceptable matching level of better than -18 dB along with isolation higher than 70 dB. Finally, some valuable recommendations as an extension of this research work are suggested in the final chapter.

Book excerpt: The terahertz (THZ) spectrum (0.3 - 3 THz) offers new opportunities to a wide range of emerging applications which demand high-quality THz sources, detectors, amplifiers, and integrated circuits. On-chip integration of planar transmission line passive components degrades their performance due to the conduction loss. Therefore, a hybrid integrated technology in which all of the high-quality passive components are implemented using a suitable off-chip planar integrated technology and the active devices are placed on-chip, has become the most promising approach. In this thesis, a low-cost and low-loss silicon-on-glass (SOG) integrated circuit technology is proposed for THz/millimeter-wave (mmW) applications. Highly-resistive intrinsic silicon (Si) is selected as the main guiding region due to its high transparency at mmW/THz frequency ranges and the maturity of Si-devices fabrication. In the proposed technology, all of the passive components and waveguide connections are made of highly-resistive Si on a glass substrate. The proposed technique leads to a high-precision and low-cost fabrication process, wherein the alignment between the sub-structures is automatically achieved during the fabrication process. This is performed by photolithography and dry etching of the entire integrated passive circuit layout through the Si layer of the SOG wafer. The SOG dielectric ridge waveguide, as the basic component of the SOG integrated circuit, is theoretically and experimentally investigated. A test setup is designed to measure propagation characteristics of the proposed SOG waveguide. Measured dispersion diagrams of the SOG dielectric waveguides show average attenuation constants of 0.63 dB/cm, 0.28 dB/cm, and 0.53 dB/cm over the frequency ranges of 55 - 65 GHz, 90 - 110 GHz, and 140 - 170 GHz, respectively. Extending the SOG platform toward the THz range is achieved by new SOG waveguide structures wherein the glass substrates below the Si channels are etched to reduce the effect of greater glass material loss at higher frequencies (i.e., > 200 GHz). To fabricate these structures, the glass substrate is etched in hydrophilic acid before bonding to the Si. Four new SOG configurations, called the suspended SOG, corrugated SOG, rib SOG, and U-SOG waveguides are proposed with their respective fabrication techniques for the THz range of frequencies. In the suspended SOG waveguide, a periodic configuration of Si beams supports the Si guiding channel over the etched grove on the glass substrate. Measurements of two suspended SOG waveguides show low attenuation constants of 0.031 dB/[lambda]0 and 0.042 dB/[lambda]0 (on average) over the frequency ranges of 350 - 500 GHz and 400 - 500 GHz, respectively. It is theoretically demonstrated that the rib SOG and U-SOG waveguides are promising candidates for THz high-density and low-loss integrated circuits. Rib SOG waveguide and U-SOG waveguide test devices are designed over the frequency bands of 0.8 - 0.9 THz and 0.9 - 1.1 THz. The proposed SOG waveguide technology can easily be extended to several THz with no limitations. A new mmW low-loss dielectric phase shifter integrated in the corrugated SOG platform is designed, fabricated, and measured. Phase shifts of 111 ° and 129 ° at frequencies of 85 GHz and 100 GHz, with maximum insertion losses of 0.65 dB and 2.5 dB, are achieved during measurements of the proposed phase shifter. Millimeter-wave integrated SOG tapered antennas are developed and implemented. The idea of a suspended SOG tapered antenna is demonstrated to enhance the radiation efficiency and the gain of the SOG tapered antenna over 110 - 130 GHz. The suspended SOG tapered antenna, which can function under two orthogonal mode excitations, shows measured efficiencies of higher than 90 % for the two vertical polarizations.

Book excerpt: The millimeter-wave (mm-wave) band has attracted attention due to its wideband characteristics that make it able to support multi-gigabit per second data rate. Nevertheless, the performance of mm-wave wireless communication systems is restricted due to attenuation loss. Design of mm-wave components and antennas is rapidly growing with the current evolution in the wireless communication systems. However, the traditional waveguide structures such as microstrip, coplanar, substrate integrated waveguide, and rectangular waveguide either suffer from high losses or difficulty in manufacturing at mm-wave band. The ridge gap waveguide (RGW) technology is considered as a promising waveguide technology for the mm-wave band. RGW technology overcomes the conventional guiding structure problems as the wave propagates in an air gap region which eliminates the dielectric loss. Moreover, RGW does not need any electrical contacts, unlike traditional rectangular waveguides. Also, the RGW can be implemented in the printed form (PRGW) for easy integration with other planer system components. In this thesis, the use of the odd mode (TE10 (RGW)) RGW to design mm-wave components and antennas is presented. First, a systematic design methodology for the RGW using hybrid PEC/PMC waveguide approximation is presented. This reduces the design time using full wave simulators. The concept has been verified by simulation and experimental measurements. Second, two different methods to excite the odd mode in RGW are studied and investigated. In the first method, a planar L-shape RGW is used where less than -10 dB reflection coefficient is achieved, from 28 to 36 GHz, and more than 93% of the input power has been converted into the odd mode at the output port. The second method uses a magic tee with a shorted sum port and provides a wideband pure odd mode at the output port with reflection coefficient less than -10 dB from 28 GHz to 39 GHz. Other mm-wave components based on odd mode TE10 RGW are designed and presented including a Y-junction power divider and 3 dB forward coupler are designed for the first time in RGW technology. The Y-junction has a wideband matching from 28 to 34 GHz with a reflection coefficient less than -15 dB and the transmission output levels are about -3.3 dB. The usefulness of the odd mode RGW lies in the ability to increase the channel bandwidth that has been achieved by designing a dual-mode RGW. A magic tee is used to simultaneously excite the fundamental mode Q-TEM and the odd mode TE10 (RGW) on the ridgeline. The proposed dual-mode RGW performance is verified through simulation and measurement of a back-to-back configuration. The proposed design achieves a matching level less than -10 dB for the two modes over the frequency range from 29 GHz to 34.5 GHz with isolation better than 23 dB. The dual-mode RGW is then used to feed a reconfigurable Vivaldi horn antenna where two different radiation patterns can be obtained depending on the excited mode. The Q-TEM generates a single beam pattern, while the odd mode TE10 (RGW) generates a dual-beam pattern. The maximum gain for the single beam radiation is 12.1 dBi, while it is 10.43 dBi for the dual-beam pattern. The bandwidth of the dual-mode antenna is 25% at 32 GHz with impedance matching less than -10 dB and isolation better than 20 dB. Finally, several antennas are presented in this thesis based on the odd mode RGW. A novel differential feeding cavity antenna using the odd mode of RGW is presented. The measured results show good performance in terms of gain, bandwidth, sidelobe level, and cross-polarization. The maximum gain is 16.5 dBi, and the sidelobe level is -17 dB and -13.8 dB, for the E-plane and H-plane, respectively. Moreover, the proposed antenna has low cross-polarization levels of -35 dB in the E-plane and -27 dB in the H-plane. In addition, two 2x1 linear frequency scanning array antennas are designed and implemented using the proposed Y-junction to generate single beam and dual-beam patterns. The beam scan is from -11(degree) to -40(degree) at 28 GHz and 32 GHz, respectively.

Book excerpt: As the communication system goes up to millimeter-wave frequencies for high data rate demands, the conventional microstrip line no longer meets the requirements due to its excessive radiation and harmful surface waves, causing unacceptable insertion loss and interference issues. The radiation and surface waves are absent in the stripline. However, its conductor loss becomes worse due to the narrower strip causing by the implemented two ground planes. In addition, any vertical asymmetry in the stripline can generate unwanted higher order waveguide modes that will be able to propagate wherever the ground planes exist. The standard waveguide technology is not suitable for millimeter-wave bands because of the small dimension of the hole, which causes fabrication challenging and high cost.The new technology of gap waveguide (GW) offers a solution to the above problems in current guiding structures. Considerable effort is being made to miniaturize it using the printed circuit technology for low-cost and low-profile applications. The microstrip-ridge GW and the inverted microstrip GW are the two candidates reported previously. However, they come with their own drawbacks. The tiny air gap makes it very sensitive to the outside pressure or the environmental factors. The plated vias in the copper strip and the electroless nickel immersion gold (ENIG) coating on the strip cause substantial attenuation and a frequency shift. In addition, it is challenging to connect to other transmission lines or conventional rectangular waveguides for the integration and measurements. Therefore, one major part of this thesis is to develop innovative GW structures without the formerly mentioned issues to be suitable for millimeter-wave frequencies and easier implementation. Another major part is developing passive components, such as antenna arrays, using the proposed new GW structures. The third part is studying the GW-based PMC packaging for the irregular ground/PEC plane. This will help extend this new packaging technology from the microstrip line circuits to the substrate integrated waveguide (SIW)- or grounded coplanar waveguide (GCPW)-based circuits.

Book excerpt: In recent decades, the millimeter-Wave (mmWave)/THz band has attracted great attention in the research community. The Terahertz frequency band runs from approximately 300 GHz to 3 THz, an incredible 2700 GHz of bandwidth. The Terahertz frequency range has traditionally been considered as the RF "no man's land", between electronic and optical technologies. Many efforts have been made to extend existing active and passive devices to take advantage of these higher frequencies. The development of a universal technology for integrating various functionalities in the THz region is the ultimate goal of many researchers. The primary focus of this research is to develop a novel silicon waveguide-based technology for implementing various structures and devices in the mmWave and THz range of frequencies. The structures introduced in this study are designed based on High Resistivity Silicon (HRS). Two technologies are developed and investigated at the Centre for Intelligent Antenna and Radio Systems (CIARS): Silicon-On-Glass (SOG) and Silicon Image Guide (SIG) technologies. The proposed technologies provide a low-cost, highly efficient, and integratable platform for realization a variety of mmWave/THz systems suitable for various applications such as sensing, communication, and imaging.
