Book excerpt: Research results for short-term and long-term petroleum elasticities are summarized, and existing Energy Information Administration (EIA) models of energy demand are used to develop estimates of price response for 1-, 3-, 5-, and 10-year intervals. In the short-run, elasticities reported for most petroleum products in most end-uses generally range from -.1 to -.4 although the numerous research estimates for gasoline demand elasticity are clustered in the more elastic range of -.1 to -.3. EIA models used in this analysis fall within these ranges and tend toward the higher (in absolute terms) end of the elasticity range. In transportation uses, for which most of the research has centered on gasoline, petroleum demand has been shown to be less responsive to price than the other sectors, with long-term gasoline estimates generally falling in the range of -.3 to -.9. In investigating the price sensitivity for periods up to 10 years using the EIA Demand Analysis System, petroleum product elasticities in all sectors are typically between -.4 and -.1. For automobile gasoline demand, the greatest proportion of the 10-year price response is manifested in increased cutbacks in travel. The model studies show that, given continued increases in the price of oil, the proportion of consumer budgets as well as industrial production costs allocated for petroleum products will increase; that petroleum prices will be volatile in instances of temporary oil shortages; and that market forces can achieve long-term conservation of petroleum, but at the cost of greater proportional increases in oil prices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines applications in two disparate fields linked by the importance of valuing information: public health and space. Researchers in the health field have developed some of the most innovative methodologies for valuing information, used to help determine, for example, the value of diagnostics in informing patient treatment decisions. In the field of space, recent applications of value-of-information methods are critical for informing decisions on investment in satellites that collect data about air quality, fresh water supplies, climate and other natural and environmental resources affecting global health and quality of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrating a contemporary approach to econometrics with the powerful computational tools offered by Stata, this introduction illustrates how to apply econometric theories used in modern empirical research using Stata. The author emphasizes the role of method-of-moments estimators, hypothesis testing, and specification analysis and provides practical examples that show how to apply the theories to real data sets. The book first builds familiarity with the basic skills needed to work with econometric data in Stata before delving into the core topics, which range from the multiple linear regression model to instrumental-variables estimation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most macroeconomic models, the substitutability between domestic and foreign goods is calibrated using aggregated data. This imposes homogeneous elasticities across goods, and the calibration is only valid under this assumption. If elasticities are heterogeneous, the aggregate substitutability is a weighted average of good-specific elasticities, which in general cannot be inferred from aggregated data. We identify structurally the substitutability in US goods using multilateral trade data. We impose homogeneity, and find an aggregate elasticity similar in value to conventional macroeconomic estimates. It is more than twice larger with sectoral heterogeneity. We discuss the implications in various areas of international economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many believe that American education can only be improved with a sizable infusion of new resources into the nation's schools. Others find little evidence that large increases in spending lead to improvements in educational performance. Do additional school resources actually make any difference? The evidence on this question offers a striking paradox. Many analysts have found that extra school resources play a negligible role in improving student achievement while children are in school. Yet many economists have gathered data showing that students who attend well-endowed schools grow up to enjoy better job market success than children whose education takes place in schools where resources are limited. For example, children who attend schools with a lower pupil-teacher ratio and a better educated teaching staff appear to earn higher wages as adults than children who attend poorer schools. This book, which grew out of a Brookings conference, brings together scholars from a variety of disciplines to discuss the evidence on the link between school resources and educational and economic outcomes. In a lively exchange of views, they debate whether additional spending can improve the performance of the nation's schools. In addition to editor Gary Burtless, the contributors include Eric Hanushek, University of Rochester; James Heckman, University of Chicago; Julian Betts, University of California, San Diego; Richard Murnane, Harvard University; Larry Hedges, University of Chicago; and Christopher Jencks, Northwestern University.
