Download or read book Shades of Sexuality written by Leamon and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shades of Sexuality: Colors and Sexual Identity in the Novels of Blaise Cendrars, by Amanda Leamon, is currently one of the few studies on the modernist poet and novelist Blaise Cendrars to be written in English. Of interest to scholars of Cendrars, Modernism, Twentieth Century French Literature and early Twentieth Century Art and Humanities, Shades of Sexuality is unique among the growing body of criticism and analysis of Cendrars' fiction in that it explores the ways in which Cendrars makes use of the spectrum of fragmented colors and other elements of disguise and trompe-l'oeil, both as an artistic device in the construction of the fictional tekst, and as a recurrent motif in the representation and exploration of the male subject and his relation to woman. The author demonstrates how Cendrars effects intersections of gender in the tekst through the manipulation of colors and their associations with femininity, ultimately undermining the illusory façade of male autonomy which dominates his fictional corpus.
Book Synopsis Returning to Ceremony by : Chantal Fiola
Download or read book Returning to Ceremony written by Chantal Fiola and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2021-10-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Returning to Ceremony is the follow-up to Chantal Fiola’s award-winning Rekindling the Sacred Fire and continues her ground-breaking examination of Métis spirituality, debunking stereotypes such as “all Métis people are Catholic,” and “Métis people do not go to ceremonies.” Fiola finds that, among the Métis, spirituality exists on a continuum of Indigenous and Christian traditions, and that Métis spirituality includes ceremonies. For some Métis, it is a historical continuation of the relationships their ancestral communities have had with ceremonies since time immemorial, and for others, it is a homecoming – a return to ceremony after some time away. Fiola employs a Métis-specific and community-centred methodology to gather evidence from archives, priests’ correspondence, oral history, storytelling, and literature. With assistance from six Métis community researchers, Fiola listened to stories and experiences shared by thirty-two Métis from six Manitoba Métis communities that are at the heart of this book. They offer insight into their families’ relationships with land, community, culture, and religion, including factors that inhibit or nurture connection to ceremonies such as sweat lodge, Sundance, and the Midewiwin. Valuable profiles emerge for six historic Red River Métis communities (Duck Bay, Camperville, St Laurent, St François-Xavier, Ste Anne, and Lorette), providing a clearer understanding of identity, culture, and spirituality that uphold Métis Nation sovereignty.

Download or read book Dreaming in Books written by Andrew Piper and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-08-22 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the nineteenth century, publishing houses in London, New York, Paris, Stuttgart, and Berlin produced books in ever greater numbers. But it was not just the advent of mass printing that created the era’s “bookish” culture. According to Andrew Piper, romantic writing and romantic writers played a crucial role in adjusting readers to this increasingly international and overflowing literary environment. Learning how to use and to want books occurred through more than the technological, commercial, or legal conditions that made the growing proliferation of books possible; the making of such bibliographic fantasies was importantly a product of the symbolic operations contained within books as well. Examining novels, critical editions, gift books, translations, and illustrated books, as well as the communities who made them, Dreaming in Books tells a wide-ranging story of the book’s identity at the turn of the nineteenth century. In so doing, it shows how many of the most pressing modern communicative concerns are not unique to the digital age but emerged with a particular sense of urgency during the bookish upheavals of the romantic era. In revisiting the book’s rise through the prism of romantic literature, Piper aims to revise our assumptions about romanticism, the medium of the printed book, and, ultimately, the future of the book in our so-called digital age.

Book Synopsis A Rwandan Bishop’s Confession by : Joel Kubwimana
Download or read book A Rwandan Bishop’s Confession written by Joel Kubwimana and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-08-12 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, I analyze why Bishop Aloys Bigirumwami prioritizes the use of the native language and the value of primal religions in spreading the gospel. According to Bigirumwami, the gospel should be taught in the native language, because it is the people's heart language. On the other hand, when the message is spoken in non-native languages, the gospel may spread but it does not reach the hearts of the people. As for the primal religions (tradition religions), for Bigirumwami they are part of what Jesus came to fulfill rather than abolish. In Rwanda, Western missionaries neglected the Rwandan primal religions by demonizing them, and the result was that the gospel was not planted in the good soil; the reason why the genocide against the Tutsi was executed in 1994 in a country where 91 percent of its population were Christians. A part of exploring the Christian mission history in Rwanda, this book points out the need to continue where Bigirumwami and others of his time left off in their effort of inculturation of the Christian faith in Rwanda and Africa in general.
