Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack B. Ralph, a Navy veteran was born in Chicago, grew up in Easton, PA, attended Lafayette College, Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, and graduated with a Master's Degree in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago. Ralph has devoted much of his life in the interest of civil rights by writing, publishing and speaking on behalf of all minorities, handicapped persons and the aging population. And now, he shows, in a light manner, examples of the serious history, interdependence and similarities and differences between those of the lives, experiences and working conditions of horses and of our own population. He has published, with entries written by persons of ages 4 to 94, the fascinating marriage saving “Love is Everywhere,” 365 ways to live a life of love. The collection of observations and definitions of love illustrate the living with real expressions of love. His “A Kid’s World,” Parts One and Two, contains thought provoking stories with messages that can start children in gaining maturity. Jack’s wife of over 60 years is a beautiful redhead and a former professional bowler. They are parents who enjoy their two sons, five grandchildren, terrific daughters-in law, and they joyously share their sense of humor also with that of their cousins, their fine in-laws and, with acceptance, possibly the entire receptive loving world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the amazing story of Ben Johnson, the cowboy who grew up in the tall grass prairie of Oklahoma, rode to Hollywood in a boxcar full of horses and became an Oscar-winning actor. Johnson co-starred in some of Hollywood's greatest Western movies of all time, alongside John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, Marlon Brando, Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Burt Reynolds, Alan Ladd, and many more. Known as "Son" to his family and friends, Johnson was the son of a three-time world champion rodeo cowboy also named Ben Johnson. Dividing his time between the world of movies and the world of rodeo, "Son" Johnson became one of the greatest rodeo cowboys of all time, winning the 1953 RCA World Championship for team roping. A man of principle who believed in the value of "honesty, realism and respect," Johnson managed to forge a successful career in the film industry without becoming a part of the excesses of Hollywood. He often paid dearly for his integrity, enduring a blacklist by famed Western director John Ford for refusing to allow Ford to verbally abuse him. Johnson's career lasted more than 50 years, with many highs and lows, but through it all he always stayed true to the cowboy code. When he won his Oscar for The Last Picture Show in 1972, Johnson took the stage and, in his typical "aw shucks" way, said, "This couldn't have happened to a nicer fella." The Nicest Fella is a must read for fans of Ben Johnson, rodeo fans, Western movie buffs, Hollywood fanatics, and anyone who still believes in the American dream! With 30 pages of never-before-seen photographs from the Johnson family collection and a complete filmography.

Book excerpt: If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor Here we are together in the digital universe. Somehow, you've clicked yourself to this page. If you came here of your own free will and desire, you and I are going to get along just fine. Life is full of choices. Right now, yours is whether or not to download the autobiography of a mid-grade, kind of hammy actor. Am I supposed to know this guy? you think to yourself. No-and that's exactly the point. You can download a terabyte of books about famous actors and their high-falootin' shenanigans. I don't want to be a spoilsport, but we've all been down that road before. Scroll down to that Judy Garland biography. You know plenty about her already-great voice, troubled life. Scroll down a little further to the Charlton Heston book. Same deal. You know his story too-great voice, troubled toupee. The truth is that though you might not have a clue who I am-unless you watch cable very late at night-there are countless working stiffs like me out there, grinding away every day at the wheel of fortune. If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor documents my time in blue-collar Hollywood, where movies are cheap, the hours are long, and the filmmaking process can be very personal. To keep up with the times, I've digitized Chins. It was originally published in hardcover/analog fifteen years ago, which is a vast amount of time in the evolution of books and technology, and it was time to get current. The advance of technology is great for a book like this, which is jammed full of pictures. When it came out originally, the photographs all had to be black and white and moderately sized on the page. Now, any photo that was originally taken in color can strut its stuff. Overall, the resolution of the images is off-the-charts better than the first go-around. This is one "sequel" that I'm happy to be a part of, since we could make so many technical improvements. The process was very similar to restoring an old movie. Since I knew that it was going to be reissued, I also had a look at the story being told and decided to condense, move, or clarify some chapters, all or in part. I also tried to add a hint of historical context, since it has been a decade and a half since Chins first came out. I hope you enjoy it. Regards, Bruce Campbell

Book excerpt: Before horse-whispering an ole time cowboy, William A. Cummins, was changing lives with secrets he learned by talkin to horses. Over 100 photos mirror the sensibility of this soft-spoken feed-bucket philosopher and author of KING and the COWBOY. The book is deeply moving, yet never self-pitying in telling Bill s hard-knocks-but-dream-inspired story. It would have been tempting given the broad strokes of Bill's life: A childhood marked by early stardom -- he became a teenage singing cowboy on radio -- he taught a golden palomino stallion to talk and pray on stage and learned trick-roping -- they headlined as Smilin Bill and his Wonder Horse King -- the partial loss of his right hand at age nine -- the early death of his mother when he was 15 -- the heart warming solace he found in horses -- and a highly successful engineering career. Instead the book allows the facts, simply told, to carry the weight. The idea for the book came when Bill was again encouraged to perform rope tricks. With wisdom coming straight from the horse s mouth he now spins cowboy yarns and hi-tech stories.

Book excerpt: Roy Rogers' golden palomino, Trigger, was the perhaps the most famous horse in film--more popular than the man himself among certain fans. In its expanded second edition, this detailed look at the animals and men who created the legend of "the smartest horse in the movies" examines the life story of the original Trigger--and his doubles, particularly Little Trigger, the extraordinary trick horse. Movies in which Trigger appeared without Rogers are discussed. More than 200 photographs (90 new to this edition) and 30,000 words of additional material are included, covering unresolved aspects of Trigger's story, controversies surrounding the sale of the Roy Roger's Museum collection and the fate of his legacy.
