Book Synopsis Furl that Banner by : David O'Connell
Download or read book Furl that Banner written by David O'Connell and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1879, Abram J. Ryan's name was a household name in the South, especially after the publication of his book Father Ryan's Poems. Republished a year later with a new title, Poems, Patriotic, Religious and Miscellaneous, and under the imprint of a Baltimore publisher with a national distribution network, it would go through forty editions until 1929. The two most important poems were "The Conquered Banner" (1865) and "The Sword of Robert Lee" (1866). These works were committed to memory by three generations of school children in the South until about the middle of the twentieth century. Margaret Mitchell, who knew them by heart, included Ryan as a character in GWTW because of her admiration for his work. Ryan was the editor of the Banner of the South, an anti-Reconstruction newspaper, in Augusta, Georgia, and popularized the term "Lost Cause". His outspoken views with regard to the policies of the federal government caused him to lose the support of the paper's owner, Bishop Verot of Savannah. When the paper was closed down, he moved to Mobile, Alabama, serving as a parish priest for ten years. He also spent three of these years (1872-1875) as the editor of the Catholic weekly of New Orleans, the Morning Star and Catholic Messenger. Until now, no one has been able to understand why Ryan left the quiet life of retirement in Mississippi to begin preaching around the country to raise money. Based on the study of the heretofore unknown correspondence between Ryan and two nuns in a Carmelite convent in New Orleans, Ryan became convinced that he could save his soul by devoting the last years of his life to paying off the mortgage on their convent. Tragically, he worked himself to death in this endeavor. This book is the first to place the Ryan story in its proper place."--Publisher's website.
Book Synopsis The Splendor of the Church by : Henri De Lubac
Download or read book The Splendor of the Church written by Henri De Lubac and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considered by many the bright jewel among the many enriching books of Cardinal Henri de Lubac, this work is a hymn to the beauty of the Church, under some of whose leaders for a time he unjustly suffered. The Splendor of the Church is, in a sense, a personal testimony of the great theologian's humility and love of the Church of Christ. It is also a classic work in the theology of the Church. Indeed, de Lubac's profound insights significantly contributed to Vatican II's Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium, especially in its treatment on the Church as mystery and as the Sacrament of Christ. Chapters: I. The Church as Mystery II. The Dimensions of the Mystery III. The Two Aspects of the Church IV. The Heart of the Church V. The Church in the World VI. The Sacrament of Christ VII. Ecclesia Mater VIII. Our Temptations concerning the Church IX. The Church and Our Lady

Book Synopsis St. Maximilian Kolbe by : Peter Damian Fehlner OFM Conv.
Download or read book St. Maximilian Kolbe written by Peter Damian Fehlner OFM Conv. and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume six of the Collected Essays of Peter Damian Fehlner, entitled simply, St. Maximilian Kolbe, gathers together Fehlner's essays on the great Conventual Franciscan saint and martyr. These works come mainly from the journal founded by Kolbe, Miles Immaculatae, and were composed in the 1980s when Fehlner was editor of said journal. Readers of this volume will note the close connection to the themes of ecclesiological renewal and the Conventual Franciscan charism treated in volume five, as Fehlner worked to integrate and synthesize Kolbe's Mariological and pneumatological insights in a context of ecclesial mission and evangelization. The essays in this volume form a mosaic of Kolbean theology and spirituality, mapping out the geography of Fehlner's own theological itinerary that will reach, in terms of scholarly output, its final destination in his posthumous Theologian of Auschwitz (2019). Themes addressed, among others, in this volume include Kolbe's understanding of the history and unity of the Franciscan Order, the Trinity in relation to Immaculate Conception, creation and evolution, consecration, Kolbe's vision for Niepokalanow, Kolbe and the contemporary magisterium, and Kolbe's relevance for a contemporary retrieval of Bonaventure's theology of history.
Download or read book Saint Joseph written by Leonardo Boff and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-02-16 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Saint Joseph Leonardo Boff seeks to provide a vigorous critique and theological analysis of Saint Joseph and in so doing attempts to undo historical misconceptions, misunderstandings, and cliches that surround the figure of Joseph. The book provides a comprehensive view of the topic as it takes into account biblical references, including the apocrypha, church tradition, papal edicts, liturgical expressions, and various viewpoints proposed by theologians. Boff is also concerned with updating the figure of Saint Joseph; his first step in this direction is to provide a clear understanding of the life of Joseph as an artisan, husband, father, and educator. He then deals with the issue of the importance of Saint Joseph for current issues concerning family and fatherhood. Lastly, Boff argues that Saint Joseph helps us to understand new facets of the mystery of God, and the author does this through his argument concerning the order of hypostatic union, where, according to his argument, there is a relation between Jesus and the Son, Mary and the Holy Spirit, and Joseph and the Father. Boff seeks here to fill a gap in the theological literature, given that theologians have concentrated their efforts on Jesus and the Son and Christology, and Mary and the Holy Spirit and Mariology; but these same theologians have, by and large, given very little time to the figure of Saint Joseph and the Father and Josephology.
