This also includes records from those that died in Crisp County, as Crisp was formed from Dooly in 1905. Additional genealogical information has been added to many of the soldiers listed here. The particular rosters included are from Company F, of the 12th Regiment; Company I, of the 18th Regiment; Company C, of the 45th Regiment; and Company C, of the 55th Regiment. Many other soldiers from various other commands with ties to Dooly County are included as well. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alva B. Spencer takes you through his personal experiences of grief, love, and the basic humility of things he was forced to do in time of war. Alva, who embraced the Baptist faith at a young age, graduated from Mercer University in Penfield, Georgia, and traveled some 175 miles by a ?two wheeled buggy? to teach in Dooly County, Georgia. Soon after, Alva entered the Confederate Army at the start of the war enlisting as a private in Company C of the 3rd Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry, leaving behind his good friend Margaret Lucinda Cone. This story is more than the Civil War; it is a developing love story. Alva and Margaret correspond from the very beginning. Spencer's letters carry us through the whole experience, from being wounded at South Mills, North Carolina, to the ?Chicimocomico Races? on Roanoke Island to collecting seashells at Nags Head, and the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Join Alva in a journey through his letters to his beloved ?Maggie.?

Book Synopsis "Our Connection with Savannah" by : Russell K. Brown
Download or read book "Our Connection with Savannah" written by Russell K. Brown and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the outset, the 1st Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters had problems. Much of the trouble lay in the organization of Civil War regiments and companies. Most companies in the early years of the war were made up of men from the same town or county. The concept of the sharpshooters was alien to this home-town tradition. Men were asked to leave the comfortable companionship of their neighbors and friends and go into a unit with people they had never met before. Despite its uncertain beginning, the battalion was molded into a fine unit by the skill and energy of its officers and non-commissioned officers. The sharpshooters early won the praise of higher-level commanders and inspecting officers. However, as the war dragged on, the battalion was reduced in numbers, morale, and efficiency. Notwithstanding its poor performance in the last months of its life, the unit has a high reputation that was well deserved. A Civil War veteran and historian called the sharpshooters "one of the best-drilled and most-efficient battalions in the service." This book objectively examines the organization, leadership, and performance of the sharpshooters, follows their wartime experiences, and devotes considerable attention to the individual soldiers. If the story of the 1st Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters has not been a well known story, it is now.
Book Synopsis Hell's Broke Loose in Georgia by : Scott Walker
Download or read book Hell's Broke Loose in Georgia written by Scott Walker and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2007-07-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darling, I never wanted to gow home as bad in my life as I doo now and if they don’t give mee a furlow I am going any how. Written in December 1862 by Private Wright Vinson in Tennessee to his wife, Christiana, in Georgia, these lines go to the heart of why Scott Walker wrote this history of the Fifty-seventh Georgia Infantry, a unit of the famed Mercer’s Brigade. All but a few members of the Fifty-seventh lived within a close radius of eighty miles from each other. More than just an account of their military engagements, this is a collective biography of a close-knit group. Relatives and neighbors served and died side by side in the Fifty-seventh, and Walker excels at showing how family ties, friendships, and other intimate dynamics played out in wartime settings. Humane but not sentimental, the history abounds in episodes of real feeling: a starving soldier’s theft of a pie; another’s open confession, in a letter to his wife, that he may desert; a slave’s travails as a camp orderly. Drawing on memoirs and a trove of unpublished letters and diaries, Walker follows the soldiers of the Fifty-seventh as they push far into Unionist Kentucky, starve at the siege of Vicksburg, guard Union prisoners at the Andersonville stockade, defend Atlanta from Sherman, and more. Hardened fighters who would wish hell on an incompetent superior but break down at the sight of a dying Yankee, these are real people, as rarely seen in other Civil War histories.
