Book excerpt: This monograph is a revised set of notes on recent applications of the theory of cones, arising from lectures I gave during my stay at the Centre de recherches mathematiques in Montreal. It consists of three chapters. The first describes the basic theory. The second is devoted to applications to mathematical programming and the third to matrix theory. The second and third chapters are independent. Natural links between them, such as mathematical programming over matrix cones, are only mentioned in passing. The choice of applications described in this paper is a reflection of my p«r9onal interests, for examples, the complementarity problem and iterative methods for singular systems. The paper definitely does not contain all the applications which fit its title. The same remark holds for the list of references. Proofs are omitted or sketched briefly unless they are very simple. However, I have tried to include proofs of results which are not widely available, e.g. results in preprints or reports, and proofs, based on the theory of cones, of classical theorems. This monograph benefited from helpful discussions with professors Abrams, Barker, Cottle, Fan, Plemmons, Schneider, Taussky and Varga.

Book excerpt: There has been much recent progress in approximation algorithms for nonconvex continuous and discrete problems from both a theoretical and a practical perspective. In discrete (or combinatorial) optimization many approaches have been developed recently that link the discrete universe to the continuous universe through geomet ric, analytic, and algebraic techniques. Such techniques include global optimization formulations, semidefinite programming, and spectral theory. As a result new ap proximate algorithms have been discovered and many new computational approaches have been developed. Similarly, for many continuous nonconvex optimization prob lems, new approximate algorithms have been developed based on semidefinite pro gramming and new randomization techniques. On the other hand, computational complexity, originating from the interactions between computer science and numeri cal optimization, is one of the major theories that have revolutionized the approach to solving optimization problems and to analyzing their intrinsic difficulty. The main focus of complexity is the study of whether existing algorithms are efficient for the solution of problems, and which problems are likely to be tractable. The quest for developing efficient algorithms leads also to elegant general approaches for solving optimization problems, and reveals surprising connections among problems and their solutions. A conference on Approximation and Complexity in Numerical Optimization: Con tinuous and Discrete Problems was held during February 28 to March 2, 1999 at the Center for Applied Optimization of the University of Florida.

Moreover, we can roughly classify the related algorithms into two categories. One category includes traditional algorithms that do not use complementarity functions. Book excerpt: For many stochastic service systems, service capacities large enough to serve some given customer demand is achieved simply by providing multiple servers of low capacity; for example, toll plazas have many toll collectors, banks have many t- lers, bus lines have many buses, etc. If queueing exists and the typical queue size is large compared with the number n of servers, all servers are kept busy most of the time and the service behaves like some "effective" single server wit:l mean se.- vice time lin times that of an actual server. The behavior of the queueing system can be described, at least approximately, by use of known results from the much studied single-channel queueing system. For n» 1 , however, (we are thinking p- ticularlyof cases in which n ~ 10), the system may be rather congested and quite sensitive to variations in demand even when the average queue is small compared with n.
