Book excerpt: "There have been many recent developments in the physics and materials science of Mott insulators, especially their recognition as emergent materials for important and innovative device applications such as information processing and storage, and the possibilities of even further applications in optical and thermal switches, thermo-chromic devices, gas sensors and even solar cell applications. Aimed at advanced undergraduate students of physics, chemistry, materials science, and electrical and electronics engineering, this book introduces the subject and reviews present knowledge in the field, enabling students and researchers to get acquainted with this very interesting and emerging area of science and technology. Professional researchers in academic institutions and industries already engaged in the programmes of correlated electron materials and devices will also find this title of use." -- Prové de l'editor.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Superconducting Nanoelectronics by : Anatoli Sidorenko
Download or read book Fundamentals of Superconducting Nanoelectronics written by Anatoli Sidorenko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how the new phenomena in superconductivity on the nanometer scale (FFLO state, triplet superconductivity, Crossed Andreev Reflection, synchronized generation etc.) serve as the basis for the invention and development of novel nanoelectronic devices and systems. It demonstrates how rather complex ideas and theoretical models, like odd-pairing, non-uniform superconducting state, pi-shift etc., adequately describe the processes in real superconducting nanostructues and novel devices based on them. The book is useful for a broad audience of readers, researchers, engineers, PhD-students, lectures and others who would like to gain knowledge in the frontiers of superconductivity at the nanoscale.

Book Synopsis Sapphire by : Elena R. Dobrovinskaya
Download or read book Sapphire written by Elena R. Dobrovinskaya and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the second half of the twentieth century, a new branch of materials science had come into being — crystalline materials research. Its appearance is linked to the emergence of advanced technologies primarily based on single crystals (bulk crystals and films). At the turn of the last century, the impending onset of the “ceramic era” was forecasted. It was believed that ceramics would play a role comparable to that of the Stone or Bronze Ages in the history of civilization. Naturally, such an assumption was hypothetical, but it showed that ceramic materials had evoked keen interest among researchers. Although sapphire traditionally has been considered a gem, it has developed into a material typical of the “ceramic era.” Widening the field of sapphire application necessitated essential improvement of its homogeneity and working characteristics and extension of the range of sapphire products, especially those with stipulated properties including a preset structural defect distribution. In the early 1980s, successful attainment of crystals with predetermined char- teristics was attributed to proper choice of the growth method. At present, in view of the fact that the requirements for crystalline products have become more str- gent, such an approach tends to be insufficient. It is clear that one must take into account the physical–chemical processes that take place during the formation of the real crystal structure, i.e., the growth mechanisms and the nature and causes of crystal imperfections.
