Book excerpt: As Charles fights to clear his name, will it be enough to give him a future with the girl he loves? Farm labourer Charles Jackson doesn’t expect much from life. For the price of a few pints of ale and enough food on the table, he’s happy to take work where he can get it. But when he finds himself at Chadwick’s farm, all that changes… Falling in love with the farmer’s daughter wasn’t part of his plans. But when they’re found in an intimate embrace, his troubles are only just beginning… Framed and imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit, Charles must clear his name. But a twist of fate means he has far more to worry about than securing his freedom… Condemned by Fate is a short story prequel to The Ambition & Destiny Series, a Victorian Era family saga. If you like love stories that are more than just a romance, then you’ll love the prequel to VL McBeath's engaging series. GOLD Quality Mark "This is an excellent short piece to introduce the series.” BooksGoSocial

Hayward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lives of the Most Remarkable Criminals was originally published in three volumes and sold by John Osborn on Paternoster Row. The volumes recount the lives, crimes and executions of eighteenth century lawbreakers. By '[setting] forth the entertainments of vice in their proper colours', the volumes were intended to provide a moral banister and reminder that, far from treading a glamorous road of pleasure, the path taken by a criminal was in fact a highway to the gallows. The original prefaces to the books, and the tales themselves, also provide invaluable insights into the history of Crown Law at the time, the grounds on which it was founded, the methods by which it prosecuted, and the judgements inflicted on criminals accordingly. This is a reprint of Arthur L. Hayward's 1927 reissue of the three volumes in one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Condemned to Repeat It addresses six historical myths that underwrote U.S. containment policy during the Cold War. The collapse of the Soviet empire seemed to confirm the wisdom of U.S. containment policy and these lessons of history as universal truths that still influence U.S. foreign policy thinking today. A European states system based on realism, balance-of-power, raison d'etat, and great power diplomacy did not keep a "long peace" from 1815 to 1914. The punitive Versailles Treaty with Germany did not cause the rise of Adolf Hitler and World War II. Erroneous analogies to Neville Chamberlain's failed attempt to avert war at Munich in 1938 worked its way into virtually every debate on the use of force to stop communist aggression during the Cold War. Franklin Roosevelt did not "give away" Eastern Europe to Stalin at the Yalta Conference in 1945. The conventional version of Yalta as a deal to divide Europe is fictional. U.S. containment policy did not create a stable bipolar world and, like the nineteenth-century balance-of power system, preserve another "long peace" for forty-five years after World War II. Ronald Reagan's military build-up and ideological crusade against the Soviet Union did not cause the fall of communism in 1989. Mikhail Gorbachev gave up the Soviet Empire. The Reagan "victory school" version of the end of the Cold War has given American leaders the dubious belief that the United States alone possesses the power to create a liberal democratic, free market world order. Condemned to Repeat It appeals to anyone with an interest in the legacy of the Cold War, including undergraduate students.

Book excerpt: When a deviant priest violates a nun, she is sworn to silence by the church in order to avoid a scandaland then married off to the priests older brother, with unforeseen consequences. Abandoned by those in whom she has placed her trust, a desperate mother suffers a mental breakdown and is deprived of her children. Near the end of the nineteenth century, two families immigrate to New Zealand, sparking a story that will follow both from that time through the middle of the twentieth century. As an unholy liaison interweaves the two groups, the emotional tapestry is unravelled and rewoven by women of the following generations, each with her own story of heartbreak and courage. Throughout the tale, sacrilege and defilement are first hidden and then revealed, demonstrating the consequences of ignorance and the condemnation of the mentally ill. In the sweeping saga set in New Zealand, women from several generations of two families deal with the heartbreak of betrayal from those they most trusted.

Book excerpt: Stone Cold Steve Austin stars in a non-stop action thriller from writer, director, and producer Rob Hedden. Eight men. Two women. Some are ugly. Some are pretty. All are condemned to death and awaiting their fate at the hands of a third world government. Each is swept up from their respective hell holes and offered the ultimate prize—their lives. An online reality show promises the condemned a suitcase full of cash and their freedom. The only proviso: survive—by killing off all of the other players. Caught up in this mad 'game' is Jack Conrad (STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN) an American agent presumed gone rogue. He refuses to co-operate, playing instead by his own rules. As time runs down and the body count mounts, while the US tries to rescue its agent and shut down the game, Conrad must do everything he can to stay alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical biography goes beyond popular legend to present a nuanced portrait of the first century Roman emperor. Commodus, who ruled over Rome from 177 to 192, is generally remembered as a debaucherous megalomaniac who fought as a gladiator. Ridiculed and maligned by historians since his own time, modern popular culture knows him as the patricidal villain in Ridley Scott’s film Gladiator. Much of his infamy is clearly based on fact, but John McHugh reveals a more complex story in the first full-length biography of Commodus to appear in English. McHugh sets Commodus’s twelve-year reign in its historical context, showing that the ‘kingdom of gold’ he supposedly inherited was actually an empire devastated by plague and war. Openly autocratic, Commodus compromised the privileges and vested interests of the senatorial clique, who therefore plotted to murder him. Surviving repeated conspiracies only convinced Commodus that he was under divine protection, increasingly identifying himself as Hercules reincarnate. This and his antics in the arena allowed his senatorial enemies to present Commodus as a mad tyrant—thereby justifying his eventual murder.
