Book excerpt: Actionable strategies for the design and construction of fire-resistant structures This hands-on guide clearly explains the complex building codes and standards that relate to fire design and presents hands-on techniques engineers can apply to prevent or mitigate the effects of fire in structures. Dedicated chapters discuss specific procedures for steel, concrete, and timber buildings. You will get step-by-step guidance on how to evaluate fire resistance using both testing and calculation methods. Structural Fire Engineering begins with an introduction to the behavioral aspects of fire and explains how structural materials react when exposed to elevated temperatures. From there, the book discusses the fire design aspects of key codes and standards, such as the International Building Code, the International Fire Code, and the NFPA Fire Code. Advanced topics are covered in complete detail, including residual capacity evaluation of fire damaged structures and fire design for bridges and tunnels. Explains the fire design requirements of the IBC, IFC, the NFPA Fire Code, and National Building Code of Canada Presents design strategies for steel, concrete, and timber structures as well as for bridges and tunnels Contains downloadable spreadsheets and problems along with solutions for instructors

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increased use of concrete in high temperature environments, it is essential for engineers to have a knowledge of the properties and mathematical modelling of concrete in such extreme conditions. Bringing together, for the first time, vast amounts of data previously scattered throughout numerous papers and periodicals, this book provides, in two parts, a comprehensive and systematic review of both the properties and the mathematical modelling of concrete at high temperatures. Part I provides a comprehensive description of the material properties of concrete at high temperatures. Assuming only a basic knowledge of mathematics, the information is presented at an elementary level suitable for graduates of civil engineering or materials science. Part II describes the response of concrete to high temperatures in precise terms based on mathematical modelling of physical processes. Suitable for advanced graduate students, researchers and specialists, it presents detailed mathematical models of phenomena such as heat transfer, moisture diffusion, creep, volume changes, cracking and fracture. Concrete at High Temperatures will prove a valuable reference source to university researchers and graduate students in civil engineering and materials science, engineers in research laboratories, and practising engineers concerned with fire resistance, concrete structures for nuclear reactors and chemical technology vessels.

Book excerpt: Advanced cementitious composites can be designed to have outstanding combinations of strength (five to ten times that of conventional concrete) and energy absorption capacity (up to 1000 times that of plain concrete). This second edition brings together in one volume the latest research developments in this rapidly expanding area. The book is split into two parts. The first part is concerned with the mechanics of fibre reinforced brittle matrices and the implications for cementitious systems. In the second part the authors describe the various types of fibre-cement composites, discussing production processes, mechanical and physical properties, durability and applications. Two new chapters have been added, covering fibre specification and structural applications. Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Composites will be of great interest to practitioners involved in modern concrete technology and will also be of use to academics, researchers and graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive treatise covers in detail practical methods of analysis as well as advanced mathematical models for structures highly sensitive to creep and shrinkage. Effective computational algorithms for century-long creep effects in structures, moisture diffusion and high temperature effects are presented. The main design codes and recommendations (including RILEM B3 and B4) are critically compared. Statistical uncertainty of century-long predictions is analyzed and its reduction by extrapolation is discussed, with emphasis on updating based on short-time tests and on long-term measurements on existing structures. Testing methods and the statistics of large randomly collected databases are critically appraised and improvements of predictions of multi-decade relaxation of prestressing steel, cyclic creep in bridges, cracking damage, etc., are demonstrated. Important research directions, such as nanomechanical and probabilistic modeling, are identified, and the need for separating the long-lasting autogenous shrinkage of modern concretes from the creep and drying shrinkage data and introducing it into practical prediction models is emphasized. All the results are derived mathematically and justified as much as possible by extensive test data. The theoretical background in linear viscoelasticity with aging is covered in detail. The didactic style makes the book suitable as a textbook. Everything is properly explained, step by step, with a wealth of application examples as well as simple illustrations of the basic phenomena which could alternate as homeworks or exams. The book is of interest to practicing engineers, researchers, educators and graduate students.

Book excerpt: A depraved satanic cult called the Illuminati is waging a covert war against humanity. This is the key to mankind's tragic history and current predicament. For more than a thousand years, Cabalist money lenders have conspired to usurp power from church and aristocracy, according to a plan detailed in "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion." This plan does not represent Jews, but only a small cabal of bankers who organized in Masonic secret societies. They intermarried with prominent Gentiles and formed a vast occult and criminal underground. They are stealthily constructing a totalitarian world government. They involve nations in needless wars and enthral the masses with porn, violence, trivia and toys. They attack our sources of identity and love -- God; family; country and race -- in order to stymie and dehumanize us. Sounds incredible, but after reading some of these 70 short essays, you'll nod in agreement. Their goal is to control your mind. If you know the truth, they can't.
