Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concord, N. C. City Directory, 1920-1921, Vol. 4: Containing an Alphabetically Arranged List of Names, a Classified Business Directory, a Street or Householders' Directory, and Much Useful Information Classified as Miscellaneous The business world has awakened to the realization of this need; and there are few towns Of any consequence that do not support and have a City Directory. Just how up-to-date or complete the Directory is, depends in most cases upon the support accorded to the publishers, provided, of course, that they know their business. It is an Old saying that you can judge a man by the clothes he wears - whether this be true or not matters little; we all know that it is generally done; Often no doubt to the disadvantage Of some one. Just as much as man is judged by his clothes, just so much is the business life and activities Of a town or community judged by its Directory; because the Directory is the most complete and the only recognized standard book of reference regarding the citizens of a community, their address, occupation or kind Of busmess in which they are engaged. When you consult a Directory of a town, you can eas11y determine if it is up to the standard, and if you find it to be well patronized, you need not be told that it belongs to a live community, the fact is self-evident. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law and Society in the South reconstructs eight pivotal legal disputes heard in North Carolina courts between the 1830s and the 1970s and examines some of the most controversial issues of southern history, including white supremacy and race relations, the teaching of evolution in public schools, and Prohibition. Finally, the book explores the various ways in which law and society interacted in the South during the civil rights era. The voices of racial minorities-some urging integration, others opposing it-grew more audible within the legal system during this time. Law and Society in the South divulges the true nature of the courts: as the unpredictable venues of intense battles between southerners as they endured dramatic changes in their governing values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarly essays on the achievements of female artists working in and inspired by the American South Looking back at her lengthy career just four years before her death, modernist painter Nell Blaine said, "Art is central to my life. Not being able to make or see art would be a major deprivation." The Virginia native's creative path began early, and, during the course of her life, she overcame significant barriers in her quest to make and even see art, including serious vision problems, polio, and paralysis. And then there was her gender. In 1957 Blaine was hailed by Life magazine as someone to watch, profiled alongside four other emerging painters whom the journalist praised "not as notable women artists but as notable artists who happen to be women." In Central to Their Lives, twenty-six noted art historians offer scholarly insight into the achievements of female artists working in and inspired by the American South. Spanning the decades between the late 1890s and early 1960s, this volume examines the complex challenges these artists faced in a traditionally conservative region during a period in which women's social, cultural, and political roles were being redefined and reinterpreted. The presentation—and its companion exhibition—features artists from all of the Southern states, including Dusti Bongé, Anne Goldthwaite, Anna Hyatt Huntington, Ida Kohlmeyer, Loïs Mailou Jones, Alma Thomas, and Helen Turner. These essays examine how the variables of historical gender norms, educational barriers, race, regionalism, sisterhood, suffrage, and modernism mitigated and motivated these women who were seeking expression on canvas or in clay. Whether working from studio space, in spare rooms at home, or on the world stage, these artists made remarkable contributions to the art world while fostering future generations of artists through instruction, incorporating new aesthetics into the fine arts, and challenging the status quo. Sylvia Yount, the Lawrence A. Fleischman Curator in Charge of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, provides a foreword to the volume. Contributors: Sara C.
