Aristotle (384—322 B.C.) was a Greek philosopher and scientist. His writings cover many subjects—including physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, aesthetics, poetry, theater, music, rhetoric, linguistics, politics and government—and constitute the first comprehensive system of Western philosophy. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, “Aristotle was the first genuine scientist in history . . . [and] every scientist is in his debt.” Plato (428/427 or 424/423–348/347 B.C.E.) was a philosopher, as well as mathematician, in Classical Greece. He is considered an essential figure in the development of philosophy, especially the Western tradition, and he founded the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. Along with his teacher Socrates and his most famous student, Aristotle, Plato laid the foundations of Western philosophy and science. Alfred North Whitehead once noted: “the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.” ——BOOKS BY ARISTOTLE—— —LOGIC— INSTRUMENT, TOOL, ORGAN | ORGANON [*] CATEGORIES ON INTERPRETATION PRIOR ANALYTICS POSTERIOR ANALYTICS TOPICS SOPHISTICAL REFUTATIONS —PHYSICS— PHYSICS ON THE HEAVENS ON GENERATION AND CORRUPTION METEOROLOGY ON THE UNIVERSE ON THE SOUL LITTLE PHYSICAL TREATISES | PARVA NATURALIA [*] SENSE AND SENSIBILIA ON MEMORY ON SLEEP ON DREAMS ON DIVINATION IN SLEEP ON LENGTH AND SHORTNESS OF LIFE ON YOUTH, OLD AGE, LIFE AND DEATH, AND RESPIRATION ON BREATH HISTORY OF ANIMALS PARTS OF ANIMALS MOVEMENT OF ANIMALS PROGRESSION OF ANIMALS GENERATION OF ANIMALS ON COLORS ON THINGS HEARD PHYSIOGNOMONICS ON PLANTS ON MARVELLOUS THINGS HEARD MECHANICS ON INDIVISIBLE LINES THE SITUATIONS AND NAMES OF WINDS ON MELISSUS, XENOPHANES, AND GORGIAS PROBLEMS —METAPHYSICS— METAPHYSICS —ETHICS AND POLITICS— NICOMACHEAN ETHICS GREAT ETHICS EUDEMIAN ETHICS ON VIRTUES AND VICES POLITICS ECONOMICS CONSTITUTION OF THE ATHENIANS —RHETORIC AND POETICS— RHETORIC RHETORIC TO ALEXANDER POETICS SELECT FRAGMENTS ——BOOKS ABOUT ARISTOTLE—— ARISTOTLE ARISTOTLE AND ANCIENT EDUCATIONAL IDEALS ARTICLES ON ARISTOTLE ——BOOKS BY PLATO—— CHARMIDES LYSIS LACHES PROTAGORAS EUTHYDEMUS CRATYLUS PHAEDRUS ION SYMPOSIUM MENO EUTHYPHRO APOLOGY CRITO PHAEDO GORGIAS LESSER HIPPIAS ALCIBIADES I MENEXENUS ALCIBIADES II ERYXIAS THE REPUBLIC TIMAEUS CRITIAS PARMENIDES THEAETETUS SOPHIST STATESMAN PHILEBUS LAWS —SPURIOUS TEXTS— HIPPARCHUS THE RIVAL LOVERS THEAGES MINOS EPINOMIS SISYPHUS AXIOCHUS DEMODOCUS HALCYON ON JUSTICE ON VIRTUE DEFINITIONS EPIGRAMS THE EPISTLES ——BOOKS ABOUT PLATO—— INTRODUCTION TO THE PHILOSOPHY AND WRITINGS OF PLATO PLATO AND PLATONISM THE INFLUENCE OF PLATO ON SAINT BASIL ARTICLES ON PLATO CATHOLIC WAY PUBLISHING

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Spenser's Supreme Fiction, Jon A. Quitslund offers a rich analysis of The Faerie Queene and of several texts contributing to the revival of Platonism stimulated by Marsilio Ficino's labours as a translator and interpreter of Plato and the ancient Neoplatonists. To the old issue of the scope and character of Spenser's Platonism, Quitslund brings fresh insights from contemporary views on gender and identity, intertextuality, and the centrality of fiction within all aspects of Renaissance culture. He argues that Spenser sought authority for his poem by grounding its narrative in a divinely ordained natural order, intelligible in terms derived from the ancient sources of poetry and philosophy. Passages central to the poet's world-making project are shown to be intertextually linked to Book VI of the AeneidM and to Plato's Symposium, regarded in the commentaries of Landino and Ficino as explanations of the gentile prisca theologia, a cosmology parallel to the tenets of Christianity. The first half of the book examines Spenser's representation of the macrocosm and its replication in human nature's lesser world in the light of divergent tendencies within humanism. The legacy of Plato is shown to be especially important in the esoteric tradition, which made the province of natural philosophy part of the soul's itinerary back to its otherworldly origins. In the second half, The Faerie Queene is interpreted as an unfolding pattern: the dynamic order of nature is flawed but not fallen, and seen against that background, human culture contains in its myths and images both corruptions of natural impulses and aspirations to transcend the limits imposed by mortality.

Book excerpt: This dictionary assembles more than 1450 English proverbs and their Romanian equivalents. Equivalent proverbs are those which express the same concept, be it literally, such as "All that glitters is not gold" = "Nu tot ce sclipeşte e aur", or with completely different words, such as "Every cloud has a silver lining" = "Nici un rău fără bine." The Dictionary is a very useful reference tool for scholars of the two languages, for researchers working in various associated fields such as linguistics, literature, folklore, anthropology, psychology, sociology, history, and for workers in newer areas such as advertising and contemporary media. The Dictionary is also of interest to diplomats and politicians who try to improve their communication by sharing ideas formulated in some common meaningful expressions; it will assist interpreters and translators, and teachers and students for whom it is important to understand not only what the target culture expresses in the same way as their own, but also what is formulated in a different way. The Dictionary is also of benefit to non-professionals who, for the sheer enjoyment of it, wish to savour the wisdom, wit, poetry and the colourful language of proverbs.

Book excerpt: Conflict, Power and Multitude in Machiavelli and Spinoza explores Spinoza's political philosophy by confronting it with that of Niccolò Machiavelli. Filippo Del Lucchese conducts a study of the relationship between Machiavelli and Spinoza from a perspective at once philosophical, historical and political. The book begins by showing how closely tied the two thinkers are in relation to realism. Del Lucchese then goes on to examine the theme of conflict as a crucial element of an understanding of Machiavelli and Spinoza's conceptions of modernity. The book concludes with an examination of the concept of 'multiplicity' and 'plural' expressions of politics, namely Machiavelli's popolo and Spinoza's multitudo. Overall, the Machiavelli-Spinoza axis offers a fruitful perspective through which to analyse the relationship between contending ideas of modernity from a historical point of view, and provides an original point of departure for discussing some key theoretical, political and juridical notions that have resurfaced in contemporary debates.

Book excerpt: This digital edition combines, for the first time, both volumes of The Complete Works of Aristotle: The Revised Oxford Translation, which is universally recognized as the standard English version. The Oxford Translation of Aristotle was originally published in twelve volumes between 1912 and 1954. The revised edition contains the substance of the original translation, slightly emended in light of recent scholarship; three of the original versions have been replaced by new translations; and a new and enlarged selection of fragments has been added. The aim of the translation remains the same: to make the surviving works of Aristotle readily accessible to English-speaking readers.

Book excerpt: Even high-speed supercomputers cannot easily convert traditional two-dimensional databases from chemical topology into the three-dimensional ones demanded by today's chemists, particularly those working in drug design. This fascinating volume resolves this problem by positing mathematical and topological models which greatly expand the capabilities of chemical graph theory. The authors examine QSAR and molecular similarity studies, the relationship between the sequence of amino acids and the less familiar secondary and tertiary protein structures, and new topological methods.
