Book Synopsis Lifestyle Migration by : Michaela Benson
Download or read book Lifestyle Migration written by Michaela Benson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relatively affluent individuals from various corners of the globe are increasingly choosing to migrate, spurred on by the promise of a better and more fulfilling way of life within their destination. Despite its increasing scale, migration academics have yet to consolidate and establish lifestyle migration as a subfield of theoretical enquiry, until now. This volume offers a dynamic and holistic analysis of contemporary lifestyle migrations, exploring the expectations and aspirations which inform and drive migration alongside the realities of life within the destination. It also recognizes the structural conditions (and constraints) which frame lifestyle migration, laying the groundwork for further intellectual enquiry. Through rich empirical case studies this volume addresses this important and increasingly common form of migration in a manner that will interest scholars of mobility, migration, lifestyle and culture across the social sciences.
Book Synopsis Revisiting Moroccan Migrations by : Mohammed Berriane
Download or read book Revisiting Moroccan Migrations written by Mohammed Berriane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the 20th century, Morocco has become one of the world’s major emigration countries. But since 2000, growing immigration and settlement of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and Europe confronts Morocco with an entirely new set of social, cultural, political and legal issues. This book explores how continued emigration and increasing immigration is transforming contemporary Moroccan society, with a particular emphasis on the way the Moroccan state is dealing with shifting migratory realities. The authors of this collective volume embark on a dialogue between theory and empirical research, showcasing how contemporary migration theories help understanding recent trends in Moroccan migration, and, vice-versa, how the specific Moroccan case enriches migration theory. This perspective helps to overcome the still predominant Western-centric research view that artificially divide the world into ‘receiving’ and ‘sending’ countries and largely disregards the dynamics of and experiences with migration in countries in the Global South. This book was previously published as a special issue of The Journal of North African Studies.

Book Synopsis Cooperating Out of Poverty by : International Labour Office
Download or read book Cooperating Out of Poverty written by International Labour Office and published by International Labour Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperatives are omnipresent in Africa and represent a significant part of the private sector in most African countries. Successful and economically viable cooperatives create economic opportunities, provide a basic level of social protection and security, and provide their members with voice and representation. Yet, there are weaknesses and deficiencies of cooperatives in certain countries or sectors that result in poor performance. This book offers an objective analysis of the state of affairs of the cooperative sector in Africa since the liberalization of the economy in the early 1990s. It contains a historical overview of cooperative development in the continent and in-depth country studies that illustrate not only the structure and operation of the cooperative sector, but also analyse the major strengths and weaknesses of various cooperative undertakings in Africa. The aim of this book is to alert governments, donors and researchers to a fragmented, dispersed movement and make a case for the viability of cooperatives in Africa
Book Synopsis The Impact of Population Growth on Well-being in Developing Countries by : Dennis A. Ahlburg
Download or read book The Impact of Population Growth on Well-being in Developing Countries written by Dennis A. Ahlburg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the nature and significance of the impact of population growth on the weIl-being of developing countries-in particular, the effects on economic growth, education, health, food supply, housing, poverty, and the environment. In addition, because family planning programmes often significantly affect population growth, the study examines the impacts of family planning on fertility and health, and the human rights implications of family planning programmes. In considering the book's conclusions about the impact of population growth on development, four caveats should be noted. First, the effects of population growth vary from place to place and over time. Thus, blanket statements about overall effects often cannot be made. Where possible, the authors note the contexts in which population effects are strongest and weakest. Second, all of the outcomes examined in this book are influenced by factors other than population growth. Moreover, the impact of population growth may itself vary according to the presence or absence of other factors. This again makes bl anket statements about the effects of population growth difficult. Throughout the chapters, the authors try to identify other relevant factors that influence the outcomes we discuss or that influence the impact of population growth on those outcomes.

Download or read book The Dynamics of Resource Tenure in West Africa written by Camilla Toulmin and published by James Currey Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this book are all West Africans. They draw on their experience to find new ways of understanding land tenure. There is increasing concern about land and resource access in West Africa, both in governments and donor organizations. This concern has emerged as a result of a number of factors: failed development projects, perceived by many to result from the neglect of land tenure issues; degradation of soils and vegetation which have been associated with poorly defined rules governing management of resources; higher levels of conflict in rural society arising from greater scarcity of natural resources; and the awareness that people need secure rights in order to invest in their farms and improve productivity.
