Book Synopsis Recent Social Trends in France, 1960-1990 by : Michel Forsé
Download or read book Recent Social Trends in France, 1960-1990 written by Michel Forsé and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1993 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the three decades from 1960 to 1990, French society underwent a spectacular transformation due to the baby boom, which was particularly broad-based and prolonged in France and caused the population to climb by a full one-third. At the same time, the French economy expanded and the pace of modernization picked up, with the result that the wealth of the French quadrupled in a single generation. The turning point between the reconstruction and development period and the period of profound social change appears to have been 1965. The baby boom was over by then, and the production system was shifting in orientation. No longer dominated by the growth of basic industries, production was now starting to focus on consumer goods and services.
Book Synopsis Recent Social Trends in Greece, 1960-2000 by : Dimitris Charalambis
Download or read book Recent Social Trends in Greece, 1960-2000 written by Dimitris Charalambis and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2004-02-25 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The newest volume in the Comparative Charting of Social Change series highlights the main elements of demographic, social, political, and economic development in Greece during the period 1960-2000. Based on a systematic analysis of available information and data, this volume provides an overview of Greece's socio-economic profile, which changed significantly during the studied period. The collapse of the dictatorship in 1974 and Greece's entry into the European Union (EU) in 1980 have led to a consolidation of democratic institutions and the improvement of living standards. During the 1960s and 1970s the country experienced high rates of economic development and relatively low unemployment rates. However, this increase in economic development has slowed since the early 1980s and the unemployment rate has risen, particularly among young people. Consistent with recent social trends in other Western societies, Greek society has become more tolerant and permissive, with more diverse and flexible moral norms. However, the prevailing family model remains traditional and the Greek Orthodox Church continues to have a strong influence on many aspects of Greek society, including social, political, and cultural life. The organization of work also follows traditional patterns, despite the introduction of new and flexible forms of employment. Female participation in the labour market remains relatively low, despite legislation and regulations that promote equality of opportunities between the sexes. Consistent with recent social trends in other Western societies, Greece's population is aging and the birth rate has stabilized at a relatively low level. Book Synopsis Uneven Development in Southern Europe by : Ray Hudson
Download or read book Uneven Development in Southern Europe written by Ray Hudson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-26 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, Uneven Development in Southern Europe is an essential reference in the analysis of the significant changes that have taken place within southern Europe. The shifts within the region’s economic, political and social structures raise important questions about the nature of uneven development, the meaning of dependency and the political consequences of social change. These underlying processes are reflected in debates on issues such as the protracted process of the Mediterranean enlargement of the European Community, the plight of ‘guest workers’ in northern Europe and the competition presented by goods and produce from southern Europe. Within the broad framework of tendencies in the movements of labour and capital that are outlined in the introduction, successive chapters examine the regional and national impact of labour migration and return, evaluate the social consequences of new forms of agricultural production or industrial investment and demonstrate the relationships between uneven development and the growing crisis of legitimacy of southern European states. The emphasis on detailed case studies ensures that the key theoretical questions are addressed with unusual precision, while individual chapters also provide useful insights for those interested in France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain or Turkey in their own right. The book will be of interest to students of development, economy, history and migration.
