But I ask you: How did we learn our mother language? How could our brain collect, organize, understand and reproduce words and sentences when we were children? No one went to school to learn to speak. Our parents or who may have raised us never taught us grammar in order to make us speak. We can realize that we are missing something in our system of foreign language teaching. It does not use the resources available in our brain/mind. Our way of teaching in the present is not structured to follow the way the brain receives stores and processes information. So, why not to change the whole system? The answer is quite simple. Who wants to train teachers? Change textbooks and methods? How long would it take? But the fact is that more scientists are discovering what Dr. Lozanov did decades ago when he didn t have the technology we have today. Our researchers have noticed that our system is not the best approach to learn. That s why so many so-called accelerated learning systems or brain-friendly approaches have appeared. The main problem is that most of them have never been really tested. They have not had a follow up for decades to check if they would not harm the students. Suggestopedia is the ONLY method that had a scientific and medical background. Before publishing his results Dr. Lozanov accompanied his students for 10 years to be sure that nobody would have any negative by-product. Only in relatively recent times has any real attention been given to British symphonies. So a comprehensive survey, showing what exists and how the situation in the United Kingdom developed, from the beginnings in the 18th century until well into the 20th century, is long overdue. The preliminary survey presented here shows how a British symphonic identity gradually took shape over more than a century, through influences from abroad and, at home, enterprising attempts to find new ways of expression. By the end of the 19th century, British symphonists had produced an impressive body of work, yet only with the appearance of Elgar’s two symphonies in the following decade did this flourishing school find a champion of international renown. In this publication, light is shone on those works that have to some extent been overshadowed, as well as on those that have remained unpublished or unperformed. Book excerpt: Traditional approaches to musical form have always adopted a top-down perspective whereby a work's form organizes and unifies the individual parts of the work through an overarching logic. How Sonata Forms turns this view on its head, proposing instead that it was the parts that conditioned and enabled the whole. Relying on a corpus of over a thousand works, author Yoel Greenberg illustrates how the elements of sonata form arose independently of one another, with an overarching idea of form only emerging at the tail end of its formative period during the eighteenth century. Appreciation of the bottom-up nature of sonata form's evolution reveals it not as a stable package of features that all serve a common aesthetic or formal goal, but rather as an unstable collection of disparate and sometimes even contradictory common practices. The resolution of these contradictions presents a challenge to composers, rendering form a creative catalyst in itself, rather than as a compositional convenience. More generally, the deeply diachronic perspective of How Sonata Forms offers an alternative to the traditional synchronic outlook that pervades music theory in general and the study of form in particular.
