He just distributed the different parts to the manuals and the pedal in a way that guarantees a clear and varied registration in harmony with the architecture of the work and the fingerings and pedallings of difficult passages. The registration only serves as a suggestion, since the ways of using the instruments are as varied as the tastes and views of the artists.

Book excerpt: First published in 2001, this work provides detailed information taken from the ’Programmes-as-Broadcast’ daily log of output held at the BBC Written Archives Centre in Caversham. Arranged in chronological order, entries are given for broadcasts of first performances of musical works in the United Kingdom, and include details of: the date of the broadcast, the composer, the title of the work, performers and conductor. In addition to its usefulness as a reference tool, the Chronicle enables us to gauge the trends in twentieth-century British musical life, and the role of the BBC in their promotion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The organist seated at the king of instruments with thousands of pipes rising all around him, his hands busy at the manuals and his feet patrolling the pedalboard, is a symbol of musical self-sufficiency yielding musical possibilities beyond that of any other mode of solo performance. In this book, David Yearsley presents an interpretation of the significance of the oldest and richest of European instruments, by investigating the German origins of the uniquely independent use of the feet in organ playing. Delving into a range of musical, literary and visual sources, Bach's Feet demonstrates the cultural importance of this physically demanding mode of music-making, from the blind German organists of the fifteenth century, through the central contribution of Bach's music and legacy, to the newly-pedaling organists of the British Empire and the sinister visions of Nazi propagandists.

Book excerpt: This collection of pieces gleaned from the unaccompanied works of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) will broaden the horizons of the amateur, student and professional musicians alike. It is intended that these transcriptions serve as a teaching aid; helping in study of form, phrasing, style and other aspects of making music. In addition, they may also be utilized for the purpose of performance. It should be noted that some register adjustments have been instituted to better suit the range limitations of the clarinet. I have tried my best to be as faithful as possible to Bach's original compositions, striving for consistency and continuity of line. All editorial markings (trills, dynamics, articulations, etc.) are solely the editors and are of course open to interpretation. the first set of pieces (Partita, BWV 1013) is heavily edited to show that keeping within the standard performance practice of the Baroque style, experimentation is expected and encouraged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bach The position of Johann Sebastian Bach as one of a numerous family of musicians is unique. Of no other composer can it be said that his forefathers, contemporary relations, and descendants were all musicians, and not only musicians, but holders of very important offices as such. All his biographers have therefore given some account of his family antecedents before proceeding to the history of his life; and I have found myself obliged to follow the same course. In other respects I have adopted the plan made use of by the older biographers, of keeping the account of his life distinct from that of his compositions. Every biography is necessarily based on that written by his two sons, four years after his death, published by Mizler, and the one published in 1802 by Forkel, who was intimate with the sons. Hilgenfeldt’s account follows these, and in later years further information has been acquired from the searches into archives, and other ancient documents, by C. H. Bitter and Philipp Spitta. Any details concerning the life and works of this remarkable man are interesting; and it is probable that researches will be continued for some time to come. Thus, last year (1898) a “celebration” took place at Ohrdruf in memory of Bach’s school career there; and[vi] Dr Friedrich Thomas took the opportunity of publishing some details of the Bach family which had escaped Spitta. The name of Bach is reverenced by Thuringian organists, and I this year had interesting conversations with his successors at Arnstadt and Mühlhausen, Herr Kellermann and Herr Möller. But the chief music-seller at Arnstadt told me that “Bach’s music is out of date; no one has now any interest in such old-fashioned compositions.”
