Book excerpt: ABSTRACTThe solo tuba repertoire of the 1960s and early 1970s was largely underdeveloped, and those pieces that had been written followed the typical conventions in composing works for more popular solo instruments. Few composers from this period viewed the tuba as a solo instrument with unique offerings available to the composer, and even fewer composers had written solo works for the tuba with the intention of highlighting its distinctive qualities. Robert Jagers Concerto for Bass Tuba is a focused composition of a unique, through-composed, innovative piece in the largely unmapped realm of significant tuba repertoire in the 1970s, paving the way for composers and professional tubists growth decades beyond the Concertos inception. Robert Jagers Concerto for Bass Tuba was commissioned by the University of IllinoisBand under the direction of Harry Begian, for Daniel Perantoni, the Professor of Low Brass at the University. Perantoni premiered the piece at the University of Illinois in 1978. Prior to 1978, there were very few serious pieces written for the solo tuba. Those serious works most frequently performed were the Ralph Vaughan Williams Concerto for Bass Tuba and Orchestra, composed in 1954, and Paul Hindemiths Sonata for Tuba and Piano, composed in 1955. This study serves to further understand the genesis of Jagers Concerto for Bass Tuba, Jagers compositional process when composing his Concerto, his unique compositional style, and the influence this piece had on later solo works for the tuba. Robert Jagers Concerto for Bass Tuba was significantly more difficult for the advanced tubist of the 1970s than the advanced tubist of today. Jagers Concerto strove to push what was possible to perform on the tuba, and helped to elevate the tuba idiom via its technically demanding sections, as well as its long, sweeping melodies which challenged the players ability to perform one phrase in a single breath. As a result of the natural advancement of both the solo tuba repertoire and the proficiency of todays tubists, Jagers Concerto is now accessible to an advanced undergraduate or typical graduate student..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Stevens' Journey: Concerto for Contrabass Tuba and Orchestra is a significant work for tuba for several reasons. One key attribute of the concerto is that the piece was commissioned by a major orchestra. The premiere of a tuba concerto by an ensemble as prestigious as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra prompted David Spies to do interviews with both the composer, John Stevens and the performer, Gene Pokorny. These interviews were printed in the major publication for tuba players, the ITEA Journal. Another reason Journey is important is because it was written for the CC contrabass tuba. This is significant for the tuba repertoire because most of the solo music is written in the higher register and therefore played on the bass tuba, which is smaller. With very few pieces written specifically for the bigger contrabass tuba, Journey has an important role to play within the standard tuba repertoire. Despite the initial excitement surrounding the premiere, and the lack of repertoire for the contrabass tuba, Journey has failed to become a staple in the tuba repertoire and is rarely performed. With a piece as difficult as Journey, the lack of a recording as a resource makes it more difficult to learn than works with available recordings. Due to statements by tuba professors about the lack of a recording and what we know from music education research about the importance of having a high-quality model for effective music learning, a recording would make this piece more approachable to potential players. As part of this project, a recording was made and is now available for easy access online. Along with the recording, the project includes updated interviews with the composer and performer, and a performance guide with discussions about techniques to help tubists learn and perform the piece effectively. The recording, interviews, and performance guide in combination are intended to provide a helpful tool for performers in hopes that more performances will secure Journey's place within the standard tuba repertoire.

Book excerpt: The Tuba Concerto was written in 1953 and 1954 in response to an invitation to compose a work for the golden jubilee of the London Symphony Orchestra. Vaughan Williams was in is eighty-second year by then; an interest on unusual instrumental sonorities was a feature of his music in the latter part of his life, so his choice of tuba as solo instrument was less surprising than it might have seemed. He justified it by treating it seriously and poetically, emphasizing its lyrical capabilities rather than the more comic propensities. The work is dedicated to the London Symphony Orchestra and its then-principal tuba player, Philip Catelinet, whom the composer consulted constantly throughout the writing of the work. The lively, outer movements both conclude with extended cadenzas, while the beautifully lyrical Romanza is Vaughan Williams at his best. The brass band arrangement is by Phillip Littlemore and is a welcome addition to Faber's brass band repertoire.
