Book Synopsis The Conceptual Foundations of Investing by : Bradford Cornell
Download or read book The Conceptual Foundations of Investing written by Bradford Cornell and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need-to-know essentials of investing This book explains the conceptual foundations of investing to improve investor performance. There are a host of investment mistakes that can be avoided by such an understanding. One example involves the trade-off between risk and return. The trade-off seems to imply that if you bear more risk you will have higher long-run average returns. That conclusion is false. It is possible to bear a great deal of risk and get no benefit in terms of higher average return. Understanding the conceptual foundations of finance makes it clear why this is so and, thereby, helps an investor avoid bearing uncompensated risks. Another choice every investor has to make is between active versus passive investing. Making that choice wisely requires understanding the conceptual foundations of investing. • Instructs investors willing to take the time to learn all of the concepts in layman’s terms • Teaches concepts without overwhelming readers with math • Helps you strengthen your portfolio • Shows you the fundamental concepts of active investing The Conceptual Foundations of Investing is ultimately for investors looking to understand the science behind successful investing.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume we present some o~ the papers that were delivered at FUR-82 - the First International Con~erence on Foundations o~ Utility and Risk Theory in Oslo, June 1982. The purpose o~ the con~erence was to provide a ~orum within which scientists could report on interesting applications o~ modern decision theory and exchange ideas about controversial issues in the ~oundations o~ the theory o~ choice under un certainty. With that purpose in mind we have selected a mixture of applied and theoretical papers that we hope will appeal to a wide spectrum o~ readers ~rom graduate students in social science departments and business schools to people involved in making hardheaded decisions in business and government. In an introductory article Ole Hagen gives an overview o~ various paradoxes in utility and risk theory and discusses these in the light o~ scientific methodology. He concludes the article by calling ~or joint efforts to provide decision makers with warkable theories. Kenneth Arrow takes up the same issue on a broad basis in his paper where he discusses the implications o~ behavior under uncertainty for policy. In the theoretical papers the reader will ~ind attempts at de~initive Statements of the meaning o~ old concepts and suggestions for the adoption o~ new concepts. For instance, Maurice Allais discusses four di~ferent interpretations o~ the axioms o~ probability and explains the need ~or an empirical characterization o~ the concept of chance.

Book Synopsis Economic Foundations Of Risk Management, The: Theory, Practice, And Applications by : Robert A Jarrow
Download or read book Economic Foundations Of Risk Management, The: Theory, Practice, And Applications written by Robert A Jarrow and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-11-02 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The book is an ideal complement to existing monographs on financial risk management. The reader will benefit from a standard background in no-arbitrage pricing. A tour of risk types and risk management principles is presented in a terse, no-fuss manner. Plenty of pointers to additional literature are given, allowing the interested reader to go deeper into any of the topics presented.'Newsletter of the Bachelier Finance Society The Economic Foundations of Risk Management presents the theory, the practice, and applies this knowledge to provide a forensic analysis of some well-known risk management failures. By doing so, this book introduces a unified framework for understanding how to manage the risk of an individual's or corporation's or financial institution's assets and liabilities. The book is divided into five parts. The first part studies the markets and the assets and liabilities that trade therein. Markets are differentiated based on whether they are competitive or not, frictionless or not (and the type of friction), and actively traded or not. Assets are divided into two types: primary assets and financial derivatives. The second part studies models for determining the risks of the traded assets. Models provided include the Black-Scholes-Merton, the Heath-Jarrow-Morton, and the reduced form model for credit risk. Liquidity risk, operational risk, and trading constraint models are also contained therein. The third part studies the conceptual solution to an individual's, firm's, and bank's risk management problem. This formulation involves solving a complex dynamic programming problem that cannot be applied in practice. Consequently, Part IV investigates how risk management is actually done in practice via the use of diversification, static hedging, and dynamic hedging. Finally, Part V applies these collective insights to six case studies, which are famous risk management failures. These are Penn Square Bank, Metallgesellschaft, Orange County, Barings Bank, Long Term Capital Management, and Washington Mutual. The credit crisis is also discussed to understand how risk management failed for many institutions and why.
Book Synopsis Risk and the Theory of Security Risk Assessment by : Carl S. Young
Download or read book Risk and the Theory of Security Risk Assessment written by Carl S. Young and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the conceptual foundation of security risk assessment and thereby enables reasoning about risk from first principles. It presents the underlying theory that is the basis of a rigorous and universally applicable security risk assessment methodology. Furthermore, the book identifies and explores concepts with profound operational implications that have traditionally been sources of ambiguity if not confusion in security risk management. Notably, the text provides a simple quantitative model for complexity, a significant driver of risk that is typically not addressed in security-related contexts. Risk and The Theory of Security Risk Assessment is a primer of security risk assessment pedagogy, but it also provides methods and metrics to actually estimate the magnitude of security risk. Concepts are explained using numerous examples, which are at times both enlightening and entertaining. As a result, the book bridges a longstanding gap between theory and practice, and therefore will be a useful reference to students, academics and security practitioners.

Book Synopsis The Illusion of Risk Control by : Gilles Motet
Download or read book The Illusion of Risk Control written by Gilles Motet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book explores the implications of acknowledging uncertainty and black swans for regulation of high-hazard technologies, for stakeholder acceptability of potentially hazardous activities and for risk governance. The conventional approach to risk assessment, which combines the likelihood of an event and the severity of its consequences, is poorly suited to situations where uncertainty and ambiguity are prominent features of the risk landscape. The new definition of risk used by ISO, “the effect of uncertainty on [achievement of] one’s objectives”, recognizes this paradigm change. What lessons can we draw from the management of fire hazards in Edo-era Japan? Are there situations in which increasing uncertainty allows more effective safety management? How should society address the risk of potentially planet-destroying scientific experiments? This book presents insights from leading scholars in different disciplines to challenge current risk governance and safety management practice.
Book Synopsis Risk, Surprises and Black Swans by : Terje Aven

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Risk Analysis presents the issues core to risk analysis – understanding what risk means, expressing risk, building risk models, addressing uncertainty, and applying probability models to real problems. The author provides the readers with the knowledge and basic thinking they require to successfully manage risk and uncertainty to support decision making. This updated edition reflects recent developments on risk and uncertainty concepts, representations and treatment. New material in Foundations of Risk Analysis includes: An up to date presentation of how to understand, define and describe risk based on research carried out in recent years. A new definition of the concept of vulnerability consistent with the understanding of risk. Reflections on the need for seeing beyond probabilities to measure/describe uncertainties. A presentation and discussion of a method for assessing the importance of assumptions (uncertainty factors) in the background knowledge that the subjective probabilities are based on A brief introduction to approaches that produce interval (imprecise) probabilities instead of exact probabilities. In addition the new version provides a number of other improvements, for example, concerning the use of cost-benefit analyses and the As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) principle. Foundations of Risk Analysis provides a framework for understanding, conducting and using risk analysis suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduates, analysts and researchers from statistics, engineering, finance, medicine and the physical sciences, as well as for managers facing decision making problems involving risk and uncertainty.
