Book excerpt: This paper reviews Tanzania's economic performance under the program supported by the Policy Support Instrument. Macroeconomic performance of Tanzania remains broadly favorable. Quarterly accounts indicate that real GDP grew by 7.2 percent in the first half of 2015, driven by construction, transport, communication, and financial services. The new government that came into power in October 2015 is also committed to further strengthen the economy of Tanzania, although program implementation slowed significantly ahead of presidential election. Revenue and financing shortfalls, together with weak commitment controls, led to the accumulation of further domestic arrears. At 3.3 percent of GDP, the fiscal cash deficit for 2014/15 was below the programmed 3.8 percent.

Book excerpt: Monetary and fiscal easing, together with specific interventions under the Economic Rescue Plan, helped contain the immediate impact of the global crisis, but private sector recovery remains nascent. Inflation, persistently high during 2009 owing to large increases in food prices, has declined to single-digit levels. Revenues continue to underperform relative to the budget, resulting in a modest scaling back in expenditure to limit deterioration of the fiscal deficit. Monetary policy has produced a low interest rate environment, but private sector credit growth has slowed sharply.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tanzania’s economy experienced adverse supply shocks in 2011. The Fourth Review under the policy support instrument (PSI) discusses that tighter fiscal and monetary policies are addressing the inflationary impact of the drought/energy shock. Performance under the PSI-supported program has been generally satisfactory. All December 2011 and March 2012 quantitative assessment criteria and indicative targets were met, other than the March 2012 floor on net international reserves, which was missed on account of delays in contracting programmed external borrowing.
