Book excerpt: Cette étude vise à comprendre l'influence des espèces présentes à la fois sur les propriétés et sur la structure du réseau vitreux, par la mise en lumière des différents facteurs qui gouvernent la performance mécanique de verres de silicates, dans lesquels les effets de substitutions cationiques et/ou anioniques ont été étudiés. Dans un premier temps, une étude bibliographique permet de placer clairement le travail dans son contexte et d'en définir les objectifs. La seconde partie fournit un large spectre de résultats expérimentaux permettant de dégager quelques corrélations entre la composition des verres et leurs propriétés (rigidité, dureté, résistance à la fissuration et au rayage). En outre, une étude de l'arrangement atomique de quelques familles de verres, utilisant des techniques spécifiques (RMN, diffusion des neutrons), est présentée. Enfin, nous discutons l'effet de traitements thermiques sur la structure et les propriétés surfaciques d'un verre à vitre standard.

Book excerpt: L'objectif de ce travail est de mieux comprendre les relations qui peuvent exister entre la composition chimique des verres d'oxydes silicates, leur structure et leur reactivite au cours de l'alteration par l'eau. Nous etudions les cations rencontres dans une grande majorite de verres, en particulier les verres de confinement des dechets radioactifs, et parmi les plus susceptibles d'apporter des informations a la fois sur la structure et la reactivite. Parmi les methodes experimentales utilisees, la resonance magnetique nucleaire de correlation multiquanta en rotation a l'angle magique (rmn mq-mas) a plus particulierement ete mise en uvre pour la caracterisation structurale des verres sains et alteres. Dans une premiere partie, nous discutons du type d'information qu'il est possible de deduire a partir d'une approche quantitative de la rmn mq-mas des noyaux 2 3na, 2 7al et 1 7o. Nous appliquons dans une deuxieme partie cette methode a des verres contenant de deux a six oxydes. Les compositions vitreuses etudiees permettent de se focaliser sur l'influence du sodium, de l'aluminium et du calcium sur leur environnement structural local. Nous mettons en evidence une evolution des distributions de distances et d'angles de liaisons en fonction de la composition chimique du verre. Nous montrons le fort potentiel de 1 7o pour sonder les verres sains et alteres. L'influence des differents cations etudies sur la vitesse de dissolution du verre est discutee a partir d'alterations effectuees sur de courtes periodes. Sur la base de l'ensemble de ces donnees, nous discutons de la part de l'effet structural qui peut intervenir sur les phenomenes cinetiques de l'alteration.

L'étude structurale est principalement effectuée par spectroscopie RMN des noyaux 29Si,27Al, 23Na sur des compositions modèles SiO2-Al2O3-Na2O-CaO-Fe2O3.Nous observons le caractère particulier des cations Al3+,Na+, Ca2+ et Fe3+. Une répartition non homogène des cations Na+ et Ca2+ sur les places de compensateur de charge des tétraèdres [AIO4]- est mise en évidence. Nous caractérisons la répartition des sites octaédriques et tétraédriques de Fe3+. Les propriétés observées sont la viscosité à haute température et le caractère biosoluble des verres. La caractérisation fine de la structure permet d'interpréter l'évolution non linéaire de la viscosité; le caractère conghruent de la dissolution est étudié et discuté en fonction de la composition du verre et de la structure préalablement caractérisée.

Book excerpt: Les verres d'oxydes sont des matériaux amorphes qui possèdent de nombreuses propriétés fondamentalement et industriellement intéressantes. Parmi elles, on trouve l'aptitude à densifier. En effet, lorsqu'un verre d'oxyde a été soumis à des pressions de l'ordre de la dizaine de gigapascal, il présente une densité plus importante, et une structure vitreuse différente. Cette observation a donné lieu dans les années 1990 et 2000 à la naissance du concept de polyamorphisme. Par analogie avec le polymorphisme des solides cristallins, on considère qu'un même composé chimique peut présenter différentes structures vitreuses, et que des transitions sont possibles entre ces différents états vitreux.Dans ce travail, nous avons cherché à mettre en évidence les changements structuraux associés à un possible polyamorphisme dans les verres d'oxyde. Pour cela, nous avons opté pour deux approches. D'une manière classique, nous avons suivi de manière in-situ la compression différents matériaux vitreux, en explicitant la dépendance de la densification à la température (verre de GeO2) et à la dépolymérisation (verres sodo-silicates). Nous avons également choisi une approche originale, qui consiste à densifier de manière permanente des compositions similaires, et à relaxer ces échantillons à haute température dans un second temps, en suivant de manière in-situ les différents processus.Cette approche novatrice nous a permis de mettre en évidence un état activé lors de la relaxation des verres densifiés vers leur état non-densifié. Cet état transitoire se caractérise par une augmentation du désordre à toutes les échelles de la structure vitreuse, et semble confirmer le concept de polyamorphisme dans les verres d'oxydes.

In other disciplines knowledge about surface properties and the background of bonding energies is also far from satisfactory; nevertheless there are many important· applications in concrete engineering, where adhesion is necessary for success and durability. These include: - coating and painting - repair of concrete surfaces - bonding of fresh to old concrete - crack injection - glueing of precast elements - glueing of steel to concrete, etc. In 1981 RILEM established the technical committee 52-RAC 'Resin Adherence to Concrete'. The main aims of the committee's work were - to collect research results and practical experiences - to initiate and coordinate research programs - to develop, on a scientific base, test methods for field and for laboratory purposes. One of the results of the committee's work is a state-of-the-art report, which will be presented orally as a General Report at the International Symposium ISAP '86, and will be printed either in the RILEM journal Materials and Structures or separately. Several test recommendations have been elaborated and will be prepared as drafts for the participants ofISAP '86. These are: - direct tensile test - pull-off test - direct shear test - slant shear test - four-point bending test - dynamic loading test - thermal compatibility test (two versions) - injectibility test.

Fiberglass-reinforced polymer com posites, similarly, have two (apparently) insurmountable obstacles to per formance: 1) Water can hydrolyze any conceivable bond between organic and inorganic phase, and 2) Stresses across the interface during temperature cycling (resulting from a mismatch in thermal expansion coefficients) may exceed the strength of one of the phases. Organofunctional silanes are hybrid organic-inorganic compounds that are used as coupling agents across the organic-inorganic interface to help overcome these two obstacles to composite performance. One of their functions is to use the hydrolytic action of water under equilibrium condi tions to relieve thermally induced stresses across the interface. If equilib rium conditions can be maintained, the two problems act to cancel each other out. Coupling agents are defined primarily as materials that improve the practical adhesive bond of polymer to mineral. This may involve an increase in true adhesion, but it may also involve improved wetting, rheology, and other handling properties. The coupling agent may also modify the inter phase region to strengthen the organic and inorganic boundary layers.
